Dortmund chief: Pulisic chose Chelsea over another Premier League club

New Chelsea signing Christian Pulisic picked the west London club over a fellow Premier League rival, according to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director.

The young American will move to Maurizio Sarri’s side this summer following an agreement between the two clubs which will see him remain in Germany for the rest of the current campaign.

Are Chelsea and Pulisic a good fit? Here is what you need to know…

  1. Chelsea signed Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for £58 million at the beginning of the winter transfer window.
  2. The 20-year-old will remain on-loan at BVB until the end of the season.
  3. The USA international attracted attention from various clubs before the Blues sealed the deal.
  4. Reports suggested both Liverpool and Arsenal were interested in bringing Pulisic to their respective clubs.
  5. Dortmund have seemingly confirmed that a rival Premier League club was interested in signing the playmaker, only for Pulisic to pick Chelsea.

A footballer with Pulisic’s potential was always bound to attract the attention of some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs. With Dortmund in a position to demand a sizeable fee for the player, only both the biggest and richest clubs could afford to sign the American.

With that in mind, such is the abundance of riches among the Premier League’s most elite clubs, it comes as no surprise that it wasn’t just Chelsea who were interested in Pulisic.

Former Dortmund midfielder Michael Zorc – who is now the club’s sporting director – admitted that a rival Premier League side was eager to secure Pulisic’s signature but the player opted to move to Stamford Bridge.

In a tweet posted by journalist Raphael Honigstein, Zorc was simply quoted as saying: “The player decided.”

Which other Premier League sides were interested?

When discussing a man of Pulisic’s potential ability, it is natural to assume that the interested clubs would be of a high stature, both in regards to financial clout and world-wide popularity.

With that in mind, it is understandably reactive to list the Premier League’s other top clubs including Liverpool, Arsenal, the two Manchester outfits and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, both the Reds and the Gunners were reportedly interested in Pulisic, contradicting the above tweet, which suggests that the other interested Premier League party wasn’t a side that had been mentioned beforehand.

Ruling out Jurgen Klopp and Unai Emery as the potential man Pulisic declined, City had also been mentioned before.

With Manchester United adapting to life under new caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Spurs unable to put themselves in a position to compete with Chelsea financial in this deal, the identity of the supposed English club who were in for the USA international remains unclear.
