Ferdinand: Chelsea players' WhatsApp group will be "going bananas" over Sarri

Former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand thinks Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri might live to regret his angry outburst about his own players following defeat to Arsenal at the weekend.

The Chelsea boss was left fuming at the nature of the 2-0 defeat at the Emirates, going on to attack his player’s ‘determination’.

How did Sarri’s Chelsea dig go down? Five things to…

  1. Chelsea lost to rivals Arsenal 2-0 with the Gunners by far the better team.
  2. Sarri blasted his players following the defeat, questioning their motivation.
  3. The Chelsea boss has reportedly held 20-minute ‘peace’ talks.
  4. Rio Ferdinand believes the Italian’s outburst could still come back to bite him.
  5. Chelsea are now just three points ahead of Arsenal in the final Champions League spot.

Following the defeat, in which Sarri insisted on playing his 4-3-3 formation, the Chelsea manager launched an extraordinary assault on his players.

Goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny were enough to give the Gunners a deserved victory in a game that saw Chelsea create very little with Eden Hazard playing in the false nine role and clearly struggling.

Chelsea managed just one shot on target at the Emirates, their fewest in any league game this under Sarri.

However, the 60-year-old blamed the defeat on his player’s attitude rather than a tactical miscalculation.

“I have to say I’m extremely angry, very angry indeed. This defeat was due to our mentality, more than anything else,” Sarri told his press conference, before adding, “This group of players are extremely difficult to motivate.”

Ferdinand, a six-time Premier League winner with United, believes that although Sarri’s frustration is understandable, his comments will create a stir among players.

“[Sarri] looks depressed and I think he has got every right to be,” the pundit said on BT Sport.

“That is a huge cause for concern. To say that your team are lacking motivation, especially in these big games. You should be bouncing out of bed and flying onto that pitch, raring to go.”

The former England player believes that although Sarri had the right to be angry, he voiced it in the wrong way and the players could now go behind the managers back.

“The WhatsApp group will be going bananas,” he continued.

“‘Have you seen this? Get on this’ – there will be comments on it. And they will all abort the WhatsApp group after.”

Can Chelsea recover from defeat to Arsenal?

Chelsea were left reeling following the defeat with the manager questioning both the motivation and characteristics of his players.

The Blues were very much second best at the Emirates but will be looking to use the January window to bolster their team as Gonzalo Higuain looks set to join the club on loan.

Sarri may well have to reconsider his tactics and did also admit he shared some of the responsibility in defeat against the Gunners despite laying most of the blame on the player’s attitude.

“I think that we lost it because of our determination. But I couldn’t possibly say I am not responsible as well, in part at least, for the mental approach. That’s something we have to share,” the Italian told reporters.

Chelsea face Tottenham in the League Cup on Thursday before they taking on Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Sunday.

They are not back in league action until Wednesday when they face Bournemouth.
