Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand gets attacked by Newcastle United fans after defending Mike Ashley.
Ashley, who bought Newcastle in 2007 is attempting to sell the club after years of criticism over his investment during transfer windows.
Ferdinand rushed to defend Ashley last year over this issue and doubled down during BT Sport’s half-time coverage of Newcastle’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey told Ferdinand that he thinks he doesn’t have sympathy with Newcastle fans because of his business relationship with Ashley.
"I don't even know him [Mike Ashley] very well!"
"When they went down, he spent £50m of his own money to get them up. Thank you, that should be."
"By the way, please say thank you for getting Rafa Benítez in! They're lucky to have him!"@rioferdy5 on Newcastle and their owner. pic.twitter.com/9TID7rJpOF

“I don’t even know him [Mike Ashley] very well!” Ferdinand responded. “It’s got nothing to do with business dealings I’ve got with his company,” he added.
“When they went down, he spent £50m of his own money to get them up. Thank you, that should be.”
“You look down the road – last season or whatever – Sunderland £1.2m they had to spend to get in the championship.
“Newcastle have been a yoyo club. He [Ashley] doesn’t want to do that anymore. he’s been there done that what’s the problem. He wants to sell the club why should he go and spend millions and millions of pounds.
“He spent £30m on a striker £30 million pound on a midfielder as he’s trying to sell the club and both of them get injured and £60 million goes down the drain. Would you do that?”
Newcastle fans did not appreciate Ferdinand’s candour and claimed that the former England international cannot be impartial on the matter due to his shared business interests with Ashely.
How Twitter reacted to Ferdinand
Some fans questioned Ferdinand’s impartiality…
'Pundits' with conflicts of interest are ruining the art of analysis. Honestly don't understand what Cole and Ferdinand have to offer in this role.

Would Ferdinand be saying that if it was the club he supported and was forking out his hard earned wages week in week out to go and watch them? Somehow I don't think so.⚪ #sackjamesdornan

Interesting that someone who has a clothing brand exclusively available at sports direct would have this opinion… Ask him what he thinks about Ashley paying his workers less than minimum wage?
— David (@dvdtatt) January 12, 2019
It has everything to do with his business
— Jason Sirigu (@JSirigu) January 12, 2019
@rioferdy5 never talk about my club again because you clearly know nothing about it :)

Others rejected his “facts”…
Can @mrjakehumphrey ask him why we should thank Ashley for spending £57mil of the CLUB’S money, when we also made £87mil in sales?? Should be thanking him for making £30mil and then not reinvesting that money in the club since?? #NUFC pic.twitter.com/Kc4NK3jDw0

@rioferdy one of the worst football pundits on TV. Never gets his facts right and loves the sound of his own voice. Would rather listen to Neville or Carragher any day. Thankfully @mrjakehumphrey is an awesome anchor which saves @btsportfootball from being awful.

Shock horror, Rio Ferdinand isn't the brightest crayon in the box. "Ashley spent his own money when they went down"….Wtf? Firstly, it was largely down to his lack of investment and bad decisions why they went down. And, all the money which he spent was generated by the club.
— Lukeyash88 (@LukeAshworth5) January 12, 2019
Someone want to tell Rio about money coming in from player sales and the fans selling out every week?
— ㅤMoin (@M0INN) January 12, 2019
And more thought he should just shut up…
