“Man Utd’s own ‘Mesut Ozil situation’ is worse than Arsenal’s”

Former-Chelsea and Marseille striker Tony Cascarino believes Manchester United’s Alexis Sanchez situation is worse than Arsenal’s with Unai Emery and Mesut Ozil.

Both Sanchez and Ozil were key players under Arsene Wenger but have been struggling for form and game time under new regimes.

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil: Five things to know

  1. Both players stand as their clubs’ highest earners after signing deals last January.
  2. Since joining Manchester United, Sanchez has scored just five goals in 37 games across all competitions.
  3. Life under Unai Emery at Arsenal didn’t begin easily for Ozil as he was subbed after an hour in the second game of the season.
  4. Under Emery, Ozil has started just half of Arsenal’s Premier League games and hasn’t been selected in a total of 20 games across all competitions.
  5. The pair were key figures at Arsenal under Wenger, winning two FA Cups together in 2015 and 2017.

However, since the absence of Wenger in both of their careers, things haven’t gone as smoothly.

Sanchez has failed to hit the heights he did at Arsenal and Ozil seems to be in a constant tug of war with Emery.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cascarino revealed he feels Manchester United have the bigger problem.

He said: “Alexis Sanchez is a bigger problem for Man United than Ozil is for Arsenal.

“There are massive challenges at Man United and he’s their highest earner.

“Alexis has been missing for 18 months as a player since the final year of his contract at Arsenal.

“The summer before last, what happened to him with Chile and the manager, questions were being raised about him, his fitness and the temperament of this particular player.”

What is Alexis’ drop in form down to?

Since joining Manchester United from Arsenal, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going the other way, Sanchez has been largely uninspiring at Old Trafford.

Many put his drop in form down to a strained relationship with ex-manager Jose Mourinho. However, since the Portuguese’s sacking, he hasn’t kicked on like many other United players have.

He scored in his first return to Emirates Stadium since leaving last January but hasn’t looked like scoring since. In 45 minutes of action against PSG in the Champions League, he failed to register a shot on target.

Following the game, Solskjaer heaped responsibility onto the Chilean to regain the form which earned him a move to Old Trafford.

Solskjaer told reporters: “I can’t do anything about Alexis. He needs to find himself as we know there is a quality player there.”

Now 30 and reportedly on £500k per week, it looks increasingly hard for United to shift Sanchez if they wanted to. But with injuries to Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, this may give Sanchez the opportunity to shine that he has been waiting for.
