Arsenal legend 'sickened' by handling of midfielder's transfer situation

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has blasted the Gunners’ decision to allow Aaron Ramsey to leave the club, describing the situation as “sickening”.

Ramsey has played over 350 games for Arsenal since joining the club in 2008, scoring 61 goals, but a breakdown in contract talks means that the midfielder is set to leave on a free transfer at the end of this season, with a move to Juventus reportedly in the works.

How close are Juventus to signing Ramsey? Five key things to know…

  1. Aaron Ramsey has played over 350 games in nearly 11 years at Arsenal.
  2. The Welshman has helped the club win three FA Cups during that time.
  3. However, Ramsey is out of contract at the end of the season and looks set to leave after talks over a new deal broke down.
  4. Juventus are believed to have a keen interest in Ramsey and are reportedly set to sign the midfielder on a free transfer in the summer.
  5. Martin Keown has described the situation as “sickening” and “sad”.

The Wales international was a star performer in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday evening and, speaking in the BT Sport studio after the game, Keown slammed the club’s handling of Ramsey’s contract situation.

“It’s the saddest thing of all really, how well he executed the plan today but in possession and out of possession,” Keown said.

“He’s obviously doing that to such an extent that [Mesut] Ozil can’t get near the team.

“But Ramsey’s not going to be part of their future and I find that sad.

“I find it a little bit sickening that he’s going to be leaving, they’re trying to make progress and one player who was singly so important won’t be a part of Arsenal’s future.”

Arsenal face rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup on Friday.

How fans reacted to Keown’s comments

Martin Keown’s comments about Ramsey certainly divided opinion on Twitter, with some Arsenal fans clearly losing their patience with the club’s board after seeing another star player leave, especially on a free.

Other fans, however, questioned whether Ramsey is actually good enough to play for Juventus.
