Chelsea move on? Serie A club provide update on transfer talks

AC Milan are edging closer to signing a replacement for outgoing striker Gonzalo Higuain with Genoa director confirming talks have opened for Krzysztof Piatek.

Higuain’s proposed move to Chelsea is reportedly on hold as the Rossoneri seek a replacement, but Piatek is now on the verge of relocating to the San Siro.

How close is Piatek to joining Milan? Five key things to know…

  1. Gennaro Gattuso has been in the market for a striker since it became apparent that Higuain was leaving.
  2. Milan reportedly reached a £30.9m deal with Genoa over the weekend for Piatek’s services.
  3. The club are expected to finalise the deal on Tuesday, enabling Higuain’s move to Chelsea.
  4. Genoa director Giorgio Perinetti has now confirmed that the clubs “have had a chat” over the Poland international.
  5. Piatek is currently the second top goalscorer in Serie A this season with 13 goals.

Should Piatek complete his transfer in the coming days then Maurizio Sarri will be reunited with his former marksman, and he will take huge satisfaction from the Genoa director’s recent comments.

“Nothing has been defined yet, there are steps to be taken,” Perinetti told Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia).

“There’s an important game today, but also the transfer market and we all know we will sit down and talk to Milan after the game to discuss whether the deal can be concluded or not.

“We have a difficult decision to make and we have to see what is worth it for us, who can fit in with who, as for example Milan have to see if Gonzalo Higuain is going to Chelsea in order to get Piatek. We’ll talk it over today.

“I can’t go public with the details right now, we have had a chat and we’ll see if it’s possible to close the gap on some situations.”

Higuain in, Morata out

With the imminent arrival of Higuain, one player who looks destined to leave Stamford Bridge is Alvaro Morata, who will reportedly complete a loan move to Atletico Madrid this week.

The Spaniard has been out of form this season and failed to impress Sarri during the Italian’s first six months in charge of the west London club.

Morata’s deal will see him spend the rest of the season in the Spanish capital but Los Colchoneros will have the option to make his switch permanent in the summer should he impress.

The 26-year-old began his Chelsea career like a house on fire after signing from Real Madrid last season, scoring eight goals in his first eight appearances, but that form dramatically dipped as he netted just two league goals at the turn of 2018.

This season he has scored just five Premier League goals and subsequently fallen down the pecking order, with Sarri preferring to deploy Eden Hazard as a false nine.

Higuain’s arrival will be met with much glee by the Chelsea faithful as the last time he worked under the tutelage of Sarri he scored 36 league goals.
