Real Madrid should look at Joachim Low for their next permanent manager, according to former player Bernd Schuster.
Los Blancos sacked Julen Lopetegui in October after a poor start to the new campaign, and appointed Santiago Solari as their initial caretaker manager.
Should Real Madrid hire Joachim Low? Five key things to know…
- Real Madrid are currently managed by Santiago Solari, who took over from Julen Lopetegui in October.
- The Argentinian has done well, pushing Los Blancos up to third in La Liga and into the last-16 of the Champions League.
- But Real Madrid are still reportedly on the lookout for a new manager to take over in the summer.
- And former player Bernd Schuster believes Los Blancos should look at current Germany boss Joachim Low.
- Joachim Low has won 111 of his 171 games in charge of Germany, and delivered the 2014 World Cup.
Due to rules in Spain, which state clubs must not have a caretaker manager for more than two weeks, Solari was appointed as full-time boss, being handed a contract until 2021.
Despite this, Real Madrid are still being linked with a new permanent manager with Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino among the reported targets.
But Schuster, who spent two years with Los Blancos during his playing career, believes the club should be looking at current Germany boss Low.
Speaking after a conversation with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, Schuster told reporters: “I spoke with him at an honorary event and I explicitly mentioned Low.
“He reacted by looking at me oddly, as if I had surprised him.
“Germans are very highly regarded at Real and it would not surprise me if Real tried to sign Low this summer.”
Low led Germany to the 2014 World Cup but endured a tough 2018 as the defending world champions went out at the group stages in Russia before being relegated from the Uefa Nations League A1.
Low’s future remains with Germany
Following the disastrous World Cup in which Germany finished bottom of their group behind Mexico, Switzerland and South Korea, many had expected Die Mannschaft to part ways with Low.
But the German Football Association confirmed Low would remain in charge of the nation until his contract runs out in 2022.
A statement released in July read: “We have had a very open and trusting exchange in which we have addressed many points, and we are all convinced that with Jogi Low we have a national coach who will analyse very carefully and take the right steps.
“It would be premature, however, to call in our team a few days after such a tournament, and the coach and Oliver Bierhoff should now take the necessary time to deal with the tournament in a sporting way and to report back ahead of the international match on 6 September against France, when we are challenged in the Nations League, to present a comprehensive analysis.”
Further pressure was put on Low following Germany’s Nations League relegation but the 58-year-old is continuing to plan ahead for Die Mannschaft, now looking towards qualification for Euro 2020.
“For us, the feeling is obviously quite bitter since we now no longer have chance to stay in League A. We have to accept that,” he told reporters in November.
“Our focus however is now like it was before – solely on qualifying for the European Championship, where we want to send a strong team out.
“With this in mind we will have lots of room to allow young players to come in and for them to get more and more experience with the national team.”
