Man Utd urged to hire Solskjaer permanently as Carrick reveals dressing room mood

Former Manchester United defender David May has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be named the club’s permanent manager amid a glowing assessment of the Norwegian’s impact from first-team coach Michael Carrick.

Solskjaer has steadied the ship since taking over from Jose Mourinho, restoring a sense of positivity at Old Trafford that was clearly missing during the final days of the Portuguese’s reign.

Five key things to know about Solskjaer’s time in charge…

  1. Since replacing José Mourinho, Solskjaer’s men are yet to drop a point, winning all five of his opening games.
  2. At the time of taking over, United were struggling to score. But the Norwegian manager’s debut saw his side put five goals passed Cardiff City; the first time United have managed such a feat since 2013.
  3. United now sit just three points behind Arsenal in fifth and six behind Chelsea in fourth.
  4. Lukaku has scored three goals in his last three games under the new caretaker manager, having netted just six times in the previous 22.
  5. Although the agreement with Molde was publicly declared to be a loan, Solskjaer appears to be in the frame to take over at United permanently.

United are currently in Dubai preparing for their Premier League clash with Spurs and Carrick believes Solskjaer’s methods are having a big influence on the players.

He told United’s official website: “Ole’s got a personality that rubs off on everybody, he’s so positive, he’s so upbeat all the time.

“You can see that rubbing off on individuals and that goes a long way to bringing the best out of players.”

May has been equally impressed with the early stages of Solskjaer’s spell in charge, which has yielded a perfect record of 12 points from four Premier League games and progression to the FA Cup fourth round.

Speaking to 888Sport, May said: “If you look at the teams United have played you’d expect any manager to come in and win those games.

“But Ole has done an unbelievable job, he really has.

“He’s transformed somewhere that was all doom and gloom into a dressing room that you can see is now enjoying their football.”

Should United give Solskjaer the job permanently?

With spirits so clearly down in the United camp during the final stages of Mourinho’s tenure, Solskjaer’s ability to re-unite the dressing room should not be understated.

And, despite his inexperience at the highest level, there is a growing feeling that Solskjaer should now be see as a long-term solution by United rather than a mid-season stop-gap.

May added: “Personally I’d love to see Ole get the job. I’ve known him for twenty years and I know that he loves the club so much. He also knows what the club is all about.

“United is a massive job, of course it is, but if you don’t give him a chance you won’t know where he might get them to. He’s got them playing the right way and getting results so why not?”
