Alisson: 'History' helped me choose Liverpool over Chelsea

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has revealed why he chose to join the Reds over rivals Chelsea in the summer.

Alisson has taken the Premier League by storm since joining the Reds and admitted that the club’s history was a factor he took into consideration.

Alisson’s debut season at Liverpool: Five key things to know

  1. Alisson has kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season (12).
  2. Alisson has only conceded 10 goals in the Premier League this season.
  3. The goalkeeper has been an instrumental part of the Reds’ title challenge along with Virgil van Dijk
  4. Liverpool have only lost one match in the Premier League with Alisson in goal (2-1 vs Manchester City).
  5. Alisson makes 2.81 saves per goal compared to Ederson’s 1.31.

Alisson’s arrival at Anfield for £67m in the summer raised eyebrows across the Premier League, but the Brazilian had no doubts about where he would play his football this season.

He told the Mail Online: “This is a club with five European Cups in their trophy cabinet. I really wanted to be a part of that history. I’ve always admired Liverpool’s history.

“I chose Liverpool for the same reasons I went to Roma. I thought this would be the best move for my career.

“Chelsea were changing their manager and not playing in the Champions League.”

With the impact he has made at Anfield, Alisson has made his ambition of being part of Liverpool’s history a possibility this season.

Despite suffering their first defeat of the Premier League season against Manchester City last Thursday, Liverpool still sit four points clear at the top of the table.

The fact Alisson has kept the most clean sheets in the league and only conceded 10 goals shows just how the Brazilian has proved his worth.

However, similar to his countryman Ederson, he has also proven to be very adept with his feet which has even shocked Jurgen Klopp.

The Liverpool boss told ESPN Brasil: “It was always very clear that he was a very influential player with the ball, but that he’s this good, I honestly didn’t see it.

“That was a little bit of a surprise and a very nice surprise.”

After missing out on Alisson, Chelsea went on to spend £71.6m on Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Spaniard made a good start to his Chelsea career but hasn’t had as big an impact as Alisson. Chelsea currently sit fourth in the league and Kepa has kept 10 clean sheets and conceded just 16 goals.

Can Alisson help Liverpool win the Premier League?

The acquisition of Alisson was a necessary one for Liverpool. Without finding a regular between Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius, the money they spent on Alisson was warranted.

However, is he good enough to win them the Premier League? When comparing his current numbers to Ederson’s at Manchester City last year, the projections look very promising.

Last season, Ederson kept a total of 16 Premier League clean sheets, whereas Alisson is already on 12. Also, despite being past the halfway point in the season, Alisson has conceded less than half the amount Ederson did last year (26).

Will Alisson be able to keep these numbers up and win Liverpool their first league title in 29 years? We will see, but until then, why don’t you take a look back over 2018 in our ‘Big Fat Football Quiz of 2018‘?
