Only Liverpool, Man Utd or Arsenal could lure Steven Gerrard from Rangers, says ex-coach Alex Miller

Only some of England’s biggest clubs could lure Steven Gerrard away from Rangers, according to his former coach Alex Miller.

Steven Gerrard took over the reins from Jimmy Nicholl at Ibrox earlier in June to much fanfare and high expectations despite the former Liverpool captain never managing a club before.

Miller, who coached Gerrard at Anfield when Rafael Benitez was in the dugout, believes that Rangers will do well this season, but they won’t do better than local rivals Celtic.

“Rangers will mount a challenge to Celtic,” he told the BBC.

“And if you make a go of the Rangers job, why would you leave? It would need to be Liverpool, Manchester United, or Arsenal.”

“Rangers will be some machine if Stevie can get them going.

“He felt he had too many of the same type of player when he came in. Too small. Nice footballers, but Rangers needed a bit of height and strength. Now they have a better squad and are better equipped.

“They don’t have enough to win the Premiership, but they have more about them than Aberdeen. They will finish ahead of everyone bar Celtic.”

How did Gerrard fare in his first league game at Rangers?

Gerrard had to contend with difficulties almost immediately in his first league game in charge at the club when his side were reduced to 10 men after Alfredo Morelos was dismissed for an off-the-ball kick at Scott McKenna after 10 minutes.

James Tavernier got Gerrard’s Rangers side ahead, however, with a converted spot kick. Rangers held on to their lead for most of the game, only to succumb in added time from a late strike from Don’s debutante Bruce Anderson.

Gerrard’s first game in charge in the league was met with mostly positive reactions from fans on Twitter and reports in the press have predominately been complimentary of Gerrard’s approach to the game.

After the game, Gerrard said his side were a “class above” Aberdeen and the former Liverpool captain expressed disappointment that his team didn’t come away with all the spoils this afternoon.

“First and foremost I’m very proud of my players,” Gerrard told RangersTV.

“The players that started the game and the players that came on; the effort that they put into that game was absolutely magnificent.

“I’m absolutely gutted that we didn’t get over the line and get maximum point because I thought we deserved it. I thought we were a class above Aberdeen today. “
