Mourinho hits out at Neville's "philosophy" comments

Jose Mourinho has outlined his displeasure towards Gary Neville after the former defender criticised his footballing philosophy.

Neville, 43, recently commented that no future Manchester United manager should be allowed to implement their own philosophy at Old Trafford and should instead follow the club’s tradition of “fast, attacking football”.

What was Mourinho’s philosophy at Man Utd? Five key things to know…

  1. Mourinho joined the club in 2016 and enjoyed immediate success, winning the Europa League and League Cup during his maiden campaign.
  2. Last season the club finished second, without silverware, but Mourinho insists that finishing as runners-up was one of his greatest achievements.
  3. The Portuguese manager was often criticised for producing a more defensive style of play, with Paul Pogba previously demanding a more attack-minded approach.
  4. Club legend Paul Scholes also hit out at Mourinho claiming he was “embarrassing the club”.
  5. Mourinho has forged a reputation across his career for producing effective but, not necessarily pretty football, justifying his cause with a very lucrative trophy cabinet.

The former England international turned Sky Sports pundit made the comments on the Gary Neville podcast but Mourinho has since retaliated, claiming the ex-right-back has no idea of his philosophy.

“Gary Neville doesn’t know my philosophy,” Mourinho told Bein Sports (via BBC Sport).

“My philosophy depends. I would love to go to a club and have [the same] conditions that [Liverpool boss] Jurgen Klopp and [Manchester City manager] Pep Guardiola did.

“I refused already three jobs because I didn’t feel it was what I want.”

Mourinho’s tenure ended in disastrous fashion last month, but caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has since come in and steadied the ship, winning his first seven matches in charge of the club.

United beat Brighton 2-1 at the weekend and next face Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday night.

Mourinho: ‘one player asked me to criticise them in private’

Mourinho’s tenancy was frequently marred by off-field criticisms aimed at his players, with Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial often in the Portuguese coach’s crosshairs.

And it seems that his verbal tirades became too much for one player as Mourinho further revealed that one of his former stars asked if he could not criticise him in front of his team-mates.

Mourinho said: “Recently, when I was coaching one player he told me and he was very polite, ‘please when you criticise me can you do it in private’,” he said.

“I told him why? ‘Because of my stature, in front of the other players when you criticise me I don’t feel comfortable’.

“Nowadays you have to be very smart in the way you read your players, and try to create the best situation.”
