Solskjaer: He can "definitely" be Man Utd's next Ronaldo

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Marcus Rashford can be just as good as club legends Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The talented Englishman has excelled since the Norwegian took the reins at Old Trafford following Jose Mourinho’s departure last month.

Will Rashford be as good as Rooney and Ronaldo? Here is what you need to know…

  1. Rashford made his debut for Manchester United in 2016.
  2. His appearance on Saturday was his 150th for the Red Devils.
  3. The England international has scored 41 goals to date, averaging a goal every 3.65 games.
  4. Wayne Rooney is Man Utd’s all-time top scorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances.
  5. Cristiano Ronaldo won more league titles (3) in six years with United than he did in nine years with Real Madrid (2).

Solskjaer’s presence has brought a new lease of life into the club, with Rashford one of many United stars who have seen their performances improve greatly across the past month.

United have won all seven games since Solskjaer’s arrival, scoring 19 goals in the process, with Rashford netting five times in that period.

Speaking to reporters, Solskjaer heaped praise upon the 21-year-old who he feels has the potential to become a football great like former club duo Rooney and Ronaldo.

Solskjaer said: “He is only 21, but the maturity he is showing at times is more than 21 and his work rate.

“If you look at the stats, I was told that he is younger than Ronaldo and Rooney to reach 150 appearances for Manchester United.”

Rashford can “definitely be top-class”

If Rashford can get to the same level as both Rooney and Ronaldo, he will know that he has achieved something great during his time within professional football.

It will take some doing to knock Rooney off of the top shelf of United strikers, with the all-time England top-scorer also netting the most goals for the Red Devils throughout the club’s history, 253 times in 559 appearances.

As for Ronaldo, he’s gone on to cement his name in football history as one of the most talented players of all-time, achieving glorious personal and team success with Manchester United, Real Madrid and currently with Serie A giants Juventus.

Solskjaer believes that Rashford’s work ethic is a key element in the England man developing into a United icon. He added: “Definitely – he can be absolutely top class.

“The more you score the more chance you have of being confident, running into the same positions.

“The way he works during the week is fantastic because he practices a lot.”
