Sky pundit: Spurs "risking everything" with transfer market inactivity

Graeme Souness believes Tottenham will be in danger of ruining their season if Mauricio Pochettino does not sign a striker in January.

Spurs failed to spend any money in the summer and have shown little desire in terms of recruitment during the winter window either.

Do Spurs need to spend in January? Five key things to know…

  1. The north London club currently have only two fit strikers available: Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente.
  2. Harry Kane has been ruled out until March with an ankle ligament injury.
  3. Son Heung-min is also at the Asian Games with South Korea and could miss the league meeting with Newcastle on February 2 if his nation qualifies for the final.
  4. Pochettino has already revealed he may not sign a striker to replace the injured Kane this window.
  5. Spurs underperformed against Fulham on Sunday but a last-minute winner from Harry Winks secured maximum points.

Spurs registered a first Premier League win without Kane or Son featuring since March 2014, but it was a rather lukewarm performance, with Llorente registering the least number of touches of any Spurs player (40).

As such, Souness believes the club are in serious jeopardy of failing to progress this season should they fail to spend in the transfer market this month.

“This was always going to happen. It could have been so much worse, could have been a cruciate, out for the season. They are light”, he said of Kane’s injury, as quoted by the Express.

“The manager has towed the party line. I’ve never been in a dressing room where you didn’t want more players. Players want new players.

“I think Mauricio has towed the party line beyond the call of duty. They’re risking everything.”

Victory for Pochettino’s men kept them on course to secure a top-four finish this season, with the club currently seven points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal.

“Remember me?” – N’Koudou reminds Spurs fans of his ability

Outcast Georges-Kevin N’Koudou made his first Premier League appearance for Spurs since October 2017, and he marked the occasion by delivering a delectable 93rd-minute cross for Winks’ winning goal.

The 23-year-old has been mooted to part company with the club this month, with former club Marseille a potential destination. However, given the current injury crisis, Pochettino may be tempted to keep hold of N’Koudou for now.

After the match, N’Koudou could not contain his delight as he posted a tongue-in-cheek tweet about his lack of game time at Spurs.

Pochettino heaped praise on the brilliance of the cross, while further lauding the belief of his players to come from behind and clinch three points.

“It was an unbelievable finish,” he told reporters (via BBC Sport). “That’s why it is so important to believe.

“The action is brilliant from Harry Winks, to recover the ball from a difficult position, he believes to score and arrive in the box. It was an amazing cross from N’Koudou.

“Sometimes in football, it is not tactics or formation, you have to believe.

“Some injuries appear in a period with a more busy schedule and another opportunity opens the door for players not consistently in the starting XI or on the bench. It is a great opportunity for different players to show quality.”
