Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy says Mauricio Pochettino’s satisfaction with his first-team squad was the reason behind their lack of summer recruitment.
Spurs, in the process, became the first club in Premier League history not to make a pre-season signing which raised eyebrows among observers.
Levy, who is preparing to move the north London club into a new home, recently attended a meeting with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust and explained the reason behind their bare summer and whether they’ll be active this coming January.
“Daniel Levy explained that the club had based the summer window on certain assumptions that some players might be leaving and certain targets would be available,” the minutes read.
“Mauricio Pochettino didn’t want to sign someone for the sake of it. He felt there were sufficient players in the squad, and that those coming back from injury would be like new signings.
“Daniel Levy said that, concerning budgets, the stadium won’t directly impact on the transfer policy. There is a certain amount earmarked for transfers and the club can only spend what is available.
“He also said that transfers were complicated with several variables so it was not possible to work out in advance how much you could spend in a given window.”
Pochettino at Spurs
After starting his managerial career at Espanyol where he ended an 18-year playing career, the former central defender relocated to England in January 2013, where he took over the reins at Southampton.
His time on the south coast lasted 60 matches, winning 38.3% of those contests, before he swapped the Saints for Spurs in May 2014.
Under his guidance Spurs have climbed the Premier League table in each of his first three seasons finishing fifth (2014/15), third (2015/16), second (2016/17) before falling back to third last season.
His overall record in all competitions as Spurs manager stands at: 229 matches played with 128 of those ending in victory (55.9%). To date, he’s lost on 51 occasions (22.3%) with his side registering 440 goals (1.92 per game) and conceding 239 (one every 86.6 minutes).
