Newly appointed AS Monaco manager Thierry Henry says former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola will be his “reference” when guiding the Ligue 1 side.
Henry, 41, was named as Leonardo Jardim’s successor midway through the recent international break after the Portuguese tactician was given his marching orders following the club’s dismal start to the season.
Monaco, after their opening league matches, sit in the bottom three having collected just six points and Henry – who begins with a trip to Strasbourg – feels what he learnt during his time under Guardiola at Barça can help him turn the fortunes of Les Monégasques around.
“Pep is the reference, for me, I’m not saying for everyone,” he told reporters.
“There’s no right or wrong; that’s the reference for me. We learned how to play the game when I went to Barcelona under him. With Pep you can talk about the game; he will not even go to sleep and will still talk about the game. You will fall asleep and he’s still talking.
“The invention he had in the game; he’s well ahead of the game, I saw it closely. You learn from people. They inspire you. But you also need to put your own little mix in it.
“Talking about the managers that I had I learned with a lot of them, every single one of them. Whether they challenged me, whether sometimes they were doing the wrong stuff. That’s when you learn the most — when things are not going well.”
Henry’s time at Barça
After five successful and illustrious seasons with Arsenal, in which he became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, Henry left to join Barcelona. He played his first season under the management of Frank Rijkaard, before Pep Guardiola succeeded the Dutchman.
In their first campaign (2008/09) together Barça won all before them, becoming the first La Liga club to claim a treble consisting of the championship, Copa del Rey and European Cup.
Henry, overshadowed by his partners Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi, would register 26 goals across 36 matches in all competitions. He’d spend a further season with the Catalan giants, before taking his talents to MLS outfit New York Red Bulls and enjoying another brief spell at Arsenal.
