How to play like Unai Emery’s Arsenal on FIFA 19 Ultimate Team

Arsenal are the talk of the town at the moment having won their last nine matches in all competitions.

It was unclear just how quickly Unai Emery would be able to implement his ideas at The Emirates this season after Arsene Wenger’s departure at the end of the last campaign.

The Gunners were beaten by Manchester City and Chelsea in their first two league games but have won every single match since then and there have been plenty of very positive signs along the way.

All of the sides Arsenal have faced are teams you’d expect them to beat, but fans are just pleased to see Emery building a team with an identity, something that has been lacking for some time.

The Spanish coach has made several tweaks to his team so far this season but now looks to have settled on his preferred system and maybe even his preferred starting XI.

We’ve had a go at replicating Emery’s Arsenal side on FIFA 19 and we can tell you it works a treat. Read on to find out how you can make your Ultimate Team perform just like Unai Emery’s Gunners this year.

What is Unai Emery’s preferred style of play?

Emery made his intentions clear in his first Arsenal press conference. “Possession of the ball and pressing when you don’t have the ball.” Simple, right?

It’s taken some time but there are signs that the Gunners are really starting to buy into exactly what Emery wants.

In the first two games of the season, things looked disjointed. Granted, the Gunners were playing against two of the best sides in the country, but there were obvious worries following two comprehensive beatings in a similar fashion to those that came in Wenger’s final years at the club.

The midfield still looked weak, the defence was exposed, players were constantly out of position, but things now seem to be coming together.

Formation

Emery has opted to use a narrow 4-2-3-1 system since his arrival at the club. He has insisted on playing out through the back and carving the opposition open with positive, forward passes and clever movement.

Petr Cech had some trouble getting to grips with things at the start of the season but, before his current injury, he looked to have adapted to having the ball at his feet more often.

Alexandre Lacazette has been in scintillating form, but at the beginning of the campaign, he wasn’t even in Emery’s starting line-up. Arsenal boss has since pushed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang into a wide forward role, leaving space for both players in the same team.

Summer signing Lucas Torreira has established himself as a crucial player in Emery’s system, having initially started the season behind Mateo Guendouzi in the pecking order.

There have still been signs that Arsenal could do with some work at the back, but some of that will come with this attacking style of play. This is something you’ll have to accept when implementing this system on FIFA 19. You will probably concede as many as you score. Which is fun.

Tactics

Defensive

One thing that has certainly been evident since Emery’s arrival at the club is the high line he’s encouraging his side to use.

As we know, sometimes that can work very well, other times, it can be a bit of a disaster. We saw Sarri’s Chelsea expose it on several occasions at Stamford Bridge in August.

But we’re all here to have fun, right? For that reason, we’d recommend pushing Arsenal’s defensive depth settings up to around a 9/10.

By putting that high line into place, you’re narrowing the gap between the defence and the attack and you’re also more likely to catch the opposition offside. When you win the ball, you’ll be right on the front foot and ready to pounce on any mistakes.

The ‘constant pressure’ style will replicate the pressing game we’ve seen Arsenal attempt put into place this season.

Offensive

FIFA 19’s default offensive style for Arsenal is ‘possession’, but we don’t think you should go with this if you really want to replicate the current Arsenal style.

Emery wants his side to build out from the back, but his style is not as oppressive as Maurizio Sarri or Pep Guardiola’s, for example.

The Gunners boss focuses on counter-attacking his opponents whenever possible and using the pace of the fast players in the attack. Switching the offensive style to ‘balanced’ will help out with this.

5/10 width should be about right. Arsenal’s team is fairly narrow this season, with the full-back’s tasked with providing the width.

Player Instructions

There is quite a lot to alter here if you’re going to make your side play just like Emery’s Arsenal this season.

Defence

The centre-backs are fine left how they are, but we’d definitely recommend tweaking the full-back’s default settings.

Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal have played a massive part in Arsenal’s scintillating attacking play so far this season, the right-back especially. Emery allows them to get forward whenever possible, with members of the midfield instructed to cover for them when needed.

We’d definitely recommend making sure your full backs know to ‘join the attack’ with their attacking runs, whilst they will also be needed to overlap the players ahead of them, seen as Arsenal’s wider midfielders are often very narrow.

Midfield

This is where you’re going to need to make a lot of important changes.

The Torreira role

As previously mentioned, Lucas Torreira’s role in this Arsenal team has been vital. Arsenal’s good form has coincided with the Uruguayan’s introduction to the team from the start.

The midfielder is instructed to break up the play and be aggressive off the ball, before laying off to the players ahead of him. For that reason, it’s definitely worth instructing this player to make ‘aggressive interceptions’ in your team.

He will also need to know to cover the full-back’s when they’re out of position. Select ‘cover wing’ to ensure this is the case.

The number 10

Aaron Ramsey has often been the player in this role for Arsenal this season. His goal against Fulham is the perfect example of the type of goal you can score on FIFA 19 if you get this system right.

The number 10 should be the main central support for the striker, meaning he must know to get into the box for crosses at all times.

We’d also again recommend selecting ‘aggressive interceptions’ for this player. A big part of their role will be to press and win the ball back as the opposing defenders look to play out from the defence.

The luxury wide playmaker

Mesut Ozil has been the man in this position on the right-hand side of Arsenal’s midfield this season.

He is anything but the typical wide player and he is given a free role in the team, with the right-sided central midfield player covering the space vacated by Ozil and the marauding Bellerin.

Let this player run the show. Select ‘free roam’ under chance creation and get them to ‘come short’ when possible. What you don’t want is this player looking to run in behind like your usual winger. Put your most gifted attacking midfield player in this role.

Attack

It is crucial that you get the dynamic between the two main attacking players in this system correct.

The wide forward

This player should be the opposite to the free-roaming player on the other side. Aubameyang has been the man in this role for Arsenal this season and when he gets it right, it’s so effective.

Whilst the other two players behind the striker will need to think about their combinations with the two deeper midfielders, this left-winger is essentially another striker.

You’ll need this player to be quick and good in front of goal. Select ‘stay forward’ under defensive support and instruct your wide forward to ‘get in behind’ with their support runs.

The focal point

Because of everything going on around him, particularly the impact of the wide forward, instructing this player correctly is crucial.

If you want this player to be as effective as possible, make him stick. The wide forward can do all the running.

To do that, make sure your striker knows to ‘stay central’ with his attacking runs and select ‘target man’ under attacking runs.

We’d advise against selecting ‘stay forward’ because that will stop this player from pressing from the front and winning tackles.

Get the instructions right for your two main attacking players and you will have your own blossoming forward bromance.
