Jermain Defoe should have played for a title-winning side, says Mark Noble

West Ham captain Mark Noble has praised former Hammers striker Jermain Defoe and believes he could have had an even better goalscoring record if he’d played for a title-winning side.

Defoe, 36, is currently at Bournemouth as he enters the final years of his career. He has only made two Premier League appearances so far this season and is yet to start a league match this term.

The former England striker, who made a name for himself during his time with West Ham, Tottenham and Portsmouth, is thought of as one of the countries most naturally gifted finishers in front of goal.

Reports have suggested that he may look to return to West Ham before the end of his career and Noble believes that, in his prime, Defoe would have thrived in a side competing at the very top of the table.

“There have been some stories recently about Jermain Defoe wanting to come back to West Ham to end his career here,” Noble told the Evening Standard.

“I don’t know if that is true but the one thing I’ve always felt about him is that he should have played for a title-winning club in his career.

“His scoring record anyway is phenomenal, but if he had played for one of those clubs, it would have gone through the roof.”

What’s next for Defoe?

The striker is finding opportunities hard to come by at the Vitality Stadium this season, with the likes of Josh King and Callum Wilson impressing for the Cherries in attack.

Defoe has been seen making more and more pundit appearances in recent months and it will be interesting to see whether he pursues that once he hangs up his boots.

He himself would argue that there’s plenty more left in the tank before then, though, and maybe a move back to London would appeal to him in the coming months.

Don’t be surprised to see Defoe in demand in the January transfer window, even at the age of 36.
