England boss Gareth Southgate responds to Man Utd links

England manager Gareth Southgate has reacted to rumours of interest from Premier League giants Manchester United.

Following Jose Mourinho’s sacking last month, former club striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Three Lions or Red Devils? Here is what you need to know…

  1. Gareth Southgate has been senior England manager since September 2016.
  2. With Southgate’s leadership, the Three Lions enjoyed a highly successful World Cup campaign, reaching the semi-finals.
  3. The 48-year-old has managed in the Premier League before with Middlesbrough but he was sacked in 2009.
  4. Since then he has been heavily involved in working with the FA and made his way up towards the England manager’s job.
  5. His international success has led to reports that Manchester United are interested in bringing Southgate to Old Trafford.

Despite Solskjaer’s fantastic start to life as caretaker manager at Manchester United, reports have still linked the club with the current England boss.

Addressing the rumours directly, Southgate quickly put the United links to bed, suggesting that he still has ambitions he is yet to achieve with his England squad.

Southgate told Sky Sports News: “I’m the England manager and it’s a privileged position to be in.

“We’ve had the best year for 28 years and we’ve got a [Nations League] semi-final this summer and a European Championship [in 2020] that’s predominantly at Wembley, providing we take care of business to qualify.

“So, it’s a hugely exciting time with the team. I don’t think we’ve progressed as far as we can yet. I think there’s room for us to grow.”

“It’s an honour to be in this role”

Southgate has done his favours no harm since taking over from Sam Allardyce at the back-end of 2016 as England manager.

A fantastic World Cup qualifying campaign, followed by England’s excellent showing this summer in Russia at the 2018 Fifa World Cup, has highlighted Southgate as a forward-thinking manager who has also showcased his leadership abilities both on the pitch and off it.

His relationship with the England squad, the British public and media outlets has seen Southgate’s stock rise, with United’s interest completely understandable.

However, Southgate is still thoroughly enjoying life as England’s main man and has expressed how honoured he feels to be in the position he currently finds himself in.

He added: “I think there is a lot of importance in life about enjoying what you are doing.

“I am still a young coach, I’ve managed less than 200 matches, so, for me, it’s an honour to be in the role I’m in and I thoroughly enjoy it.”
