Solskjaer: No one beats this Man Utd player for work rate

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Marcus Rashford might be the best striker in the division right now after he scored again in the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory over Brighton.

After regressing somewhat under Jose Mourinho, Rashford is in the form of his life at the moment. The 21-year-old striker has scored four goals in four consecutive games, five goals in the past six Premier League fixtures and contributed to 12 goals in his last 12 appearances for the club.

Is Rashford the league’s most in-form striker? Four things to know…

  1. Rashford struggled to find the net under Mourinho, managing just 13 goals in 52 games last season.
  2. Since Solskjaer took over the England international has bagged five goals in six Premier League games.
  3. Rashford is still well behind the league’s top scorers, scoring only 50% of league-leader Mohamed Salah’s goals – though he would not be classed as a striker.
  4. Rashford has also scored six fewer goals than Spurs striker Harry Kane (14), but the Spurs man is currently injured.

After scoring United’s winner against Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday the sensational striker was in fine form again on Saturday and found himself on the score sheet just before half-time. In typical style the forward cut to the byline from the left flank, where instead of pulling back a cross, he flummoxed his marker with a cool Cruyff turn before bending the ball into the top corner from a tight angle.

Following the Red Devils’ sixth consecutive victory in the Premier League, Solskjaer was asked by reporters if he felt Rashford was the best striker in the Premier League.

Solskjaer responded: “You can argue for many strikers, but I’m glad he’s in my team. Harry Kane is injured so maybe that gives [Rashford] a better chance to be the best one at the moment.

“I’ve got to say no one beats him at his work rate, no one beats him on attitude and at the moment he’s very confident in front of goal.

“He finishes, he tries to shoot. He doesn’t think twice about it. He made the chance for Jesse [Lingard]. I can’t believe how Jesse didn’t score on that chance.

“So, at the moment I think he’s playing the best football in his career.”

Rashford’s goal was United’s second of the afternoon and they headed into their dressing room at the break comfortably in control of the game.

They could have added to their lead after the interval and put the game to bed, but poor defending from a cross allowed the Seagulls to get one back. Solskjaer’s men then had to withstand a nervy finish to the game as Brighton frantically searched for an equaliser.

United held on to their lead and their unbeaten streak under Solskjaer continues. They travel to the Emirates next in the FA Cup fourth round.

“Rashford tries too hard”

Rashford’s improvement in front of goal has been attributed to the arrival of Solskjaer in the United dugout but, as well as the 21-year-old’s own endeavours, his sensational form could also be because he’s benefited from the advice of the Red Devils’ all-time top scorer.

Former United star Wayne Rooney says he advised Rashford when he returned to international duty against the United States last year.

“When I went back to play for the national team against the USA, I spoke to Marcus and he was trying too much, “Rooney told ESPN.

“He was trying too hard, he was working too hard, he was getting tired at the end of games.

“But the scary thing with Marcus, when he runs at you with the ball he’s impossible to defend and I reminded him to keep doing that, to just get the ball and run at defenders.”
