Most people to play the game would argue that it’s harder to score than it has been in recent years. EA Sports have added ‘Timed Finishing’ to FIFA 19 and mastering this could be key to ending your troubles in front of goal.

It must be stressed, there is a time and a place to use Timed Finishing. It’s not something you need to use with every shot on goal, but perfecting the timing of that extra tap of the shoot button could really increase your chances of scoring from certain situations.

What is EA Sports’ new Timed Finishing feature on FIFA 19?

EA Sports have chosen to add this feature to freshen up the usual shooting scenarios that we see on FIFA.

There is a huge element of risk and reward to activating Timed Finishing, but get it right and you’ll start scoring some hugely satisfying goals.

Before this year’s game, there were already several different ways to shoot on FIFA. Tapping or holding down the shoot button will see your player hit a pretty general shot depending on the situation they’re in at the time. Finesse shooting is something that has become very popular and effective in recent years, whilst chipped shots have also now become a regular feature on the game.

FIFA 17 saw the introduction of low driven shots, which also became a very useful way to finish certain chances. They were activated by tapping the shoot button twice and this is where things have changed on FIFA 19.

This year, low driven shots remain on the game but are activated in a different way. Hold down R1 and L1/RB and LB whilst hitting shoot and you’ll still be able to drive a shot hard and low.

The previous method of hitting shoot twice is where Timed Finishing comes in on FIFA 19. As you might expect, the timing of that second tap is key.

Timed Finishing applies to any type of shot, so you can use it when heading a ball, when using a finesse shot, or when trying to pull off a volley or bicycle kick.

Master this method and use it at the right times and you’ll be scoring a lot of very, very good goals on FIFA this year.

How to activate Timed Finishing on FIFA 19

Tip: To master this, use the trainer initially. When you activate a timed finish, a bar will appear above the player to indicate whether your shot is too early, perfect, or too late.

This takes some getting used to. It’s worth setting some time aside to really master Timed Finishing. It really will make a difference to your game once you’ve perfected it.

When you’re in a position to shoot, fire up your effort with the shoot button as normal. The length of the initial tap will determine the power behind the shot.

You’ll then need to choose the right time to tap shoot again… this is the hard bit.

Hit the shoot button once more just as your player is making contact with the ball.

You’re better of being too late with your second tap than you are too early. Hit shoot again too early and you’re unlikely to trouble the goalkeeper.

A perfectly timed finish doesn’t guarantee a goal, but it will certainly increase your chances. If you think this feature is worthless, you’re wrong. A shot performed with perfect technique can make all the difference, but if you really are fed up with it, Timed Finishing can be turned off in settings.

When to use Timed Finishing on FIFA 19

This is key. If you’re having trouble perfecting the new feature then don’t be alarmed, it’s not something you need to use all the time.

From our experience, Timed Finishing is best used from long shots or when trying to head or volley in from a cross. Long-range finessed efforts are a particularly good time to activate the feature.

It’s good to use when you’re having a pop shot that you don’t think is particularly likely to trouble the keeper. Perfecting the timing of your effort could give it that extra edge.

We wouldn’t recommend using it in one-on-one situations. Get it wrong, which is always possible, and you’ve missed a golden opportunity.

The quicker or more difficult the shot attempt is, the more likely you are to get it wrong.

Timed Finishing on FIFA 19: the verdict

Overall, we think this is a very cool new addition from EA Sports.

You may not think that yourselves when you’re getting used to it, but it’s worth persisting with.

The challenge of having to time your shots correctly makes things more realistic. How often do we see mistimed shots, headers and volleys in real life? Timing is crucial and that’s reflected in the game.

We’ve found that normal shooting is harder on the game this year, too. Those one-on-one situations you could just easily finish with a finessed shot in years gone by? Not anymore. We’re glad EA have freshened up the different ways to shoot on FIFA again.

Timed Finishing has been brought in with the intention of adding to the realism of FIFA 19 and we think it’s done just that.

All you need to do now is load up the game and start practicing.
