Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli has admitted the club got “carried away” with Premier League title talk over the festive period.
Spurs currently occupy third position in the league table heading out the other end of a business Christmas period.
Can Spurs still win the title? Five things you need to know…
- Tottenham defeated Bournemouth 5-0 on Boxing Day to push them up into second place behind league leaders Liverpool.
- Just three days later, however, Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost 3-1 to Wolves at Wembley as they failed to capitalise on their previous result.
- Since then, the north London club have secured two away victories including a 3-0 win against Cardiff City in the Premier League.
- The other was a thumping 7-0 victory over League Two side Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup 3rd round.
- Alli believes the club got ahead of themselves following their win over the Cherries.
Speaking to reporters, Alli discussed how the club may have taken their position for granted, becoming distracted by their league standing.
When asked how Pochettino reacted following their 3-1 defeat at home to recently promoted Wolves, Alli said: “I don’t think he needed to say too much, to be honest. As players we were disappointed.
“We had been in great form before that and maybe we got a little bit carried away with ourselves.
“They’re a fantastic team and maybe we just thought we would win the game (against Wolves).
“But you can’t do that if you want to win things and be a top, top team.
“You have to be clinical and ruthless in every game and you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas and we all had a look at ourselves after and we know we can’t let that happen.”
A season-defining January for Spurs?
Having escaped the Christmas period with a reasonable amount of success – the Wolves result aside – Spurs will be looking at the upcoming fixtures with a sense of conflict.
Their next match comes on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup as they entertain London rivals Chelsea in the semi-final first-leg at Wembley Stadium.
The second leg takes place at Stamford Bridge two weeks later. With Spurs in with a chance of winning their first trophy for over a decade, how much will Pochettino invest in the Carabao Cup knowing other competitions are perhaps more important?
With Spurs still in contention at the top end of the Premier League, their next three league fixtures are against a resurgent Manchester United, a battling Fulham and an impressive Watford.
With a two-legged Champions League knock-out tie to come next month also, the next few weeks may define whether this season for Spurs is deemed a success or a failure by both club supporters and general football public alike.
