Tottenham Hotspur have been accused of going backwards as a club by former club manager Harry Redknapp.
Spurs face a hurting Borussia Dortmund side in the Champions League round of 16 second leg in Germany tomorrow evening.
Have Spurs regressed? Five things you need to know…
- Tottenham haven’t won a trophy since 2008 when they triumphed in the EFL Cup.
- Spurs have only participated in the Champions League five times, three of those under Mauricio Pochettino.
- Despite winning 20 of 29 games in the Premier League this season, they are no longer in the running to win the league title.
- They were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round and lost in the EFL Cup semi-final to Chelsea.
- They are 3-0 up following the Champions League round of 16 first leg win over Dortmund going into tomorrow’s match.
Former Spurs boss Redknapp – who himself took Tottenham into the Champions League following a successful campaign in 2010 – believes that despite the abundance of talent at the club, including the playing staff and Pochettino himself, the club hasn’t improved over the last few years.
In fact, Redknapp believes that they are in a worse state than they were just two years ago and stresses that they must improve the squad this summer in order to turn things around.
“I honestly think Tottenham were better two years ago when Kyle Walker was playing right-back and absolutely on fire, Danny Rose was in his pomp absolutely flying and Dembele was top drawer,” Redknapp told TalkSport.
“They were absolutely incredible then. Rose has had his injuries and has not been quite the same, Walker obviously moved on and Dembele has moved on.
“But I’m sure they will regroup again in the summer, one or two, a little bit of tweaking and they will be strong again next year.”

Spurs’ vital match in Germany
Tomorrow evening will see Spurs take a big leap into the Champions League quarter-finals IF they make sure that their three-goal advantage doesn’t get overturned in Dortmund.
A fantastic performance at Wembley Stadium last month – despite the absence of star man Harry Kane – saw Spurs take command of the round of 16 tie against the Bundesliga side and put themselves in a fantastic position to progress.
If they fail to deliver tomorrow night, they could be in danger of embarrassing themselves further following recent weak performances against lowly Burnley and top-four rivals Chelsea.
Pochettino must make sure his side don’t mirror the words spoken by former boss Redknapp and at least match the Tottenham side who managed to reach the quarter-finals in the 2010/11 season.
If not, does Redknapp have a point?
