Newcastle hero Ayoze Perez was responsible for Everton’s “complete meltdown” – Garth Crooks

Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez was the key player in the club’s 3-2 victory against Marco Silva’s Everton this weekend, according to football pundit Garth Crooks.

The Magpies came from 2-0 down to reverse the scoreline and pick up three vital points which could go a long way to ensuring Premier League survival this season.

Newcastle vs Everton: what happened? Five things you need to know…

  1. The Toffees went 1-0 up following a clever header from striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
  2. They doubled their lead when Richarlison tapped in from close range, which saw Silva’s side go in at half-time 2-0 up.
  3. However, Newcastle came out fighting and scored through Salomón Rondón to get the hosts back into the match.
  4. Perez himself equalised for the Geordies before he struck the winning goal three minutes later in the 84th minute.
  5. Newcastle are now six points above the relegation zone and just three points behind Everton, who sit in 11th.

Crooks dispelled Silva’s comments regarding the referee’s influence on the game and stressed that the performance of Perez decided the game.

Crooks told the BBC: “So, Marco Silva is the latest manager who thinks he can abuse the referee due to his team’s inability to protect a two-goal lead and his goalkeeper’s crisis in confidence?

“Well, I can tell him that it wasn’t Lee Mason who was responsible for his team’s complete meltdown but Ayoze Perez.

“The Spaniard ran Everton ragged, never lost his nerve and never gave up. Unlike Everton.”

Next up for the Toffees is a home fixture against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

How long does Silva have?

Silva’s Everton have disappointed for the majority of the campaign. This is a squad which has been heavily invested in but is yet to replace the attacking prowess of former striker Romelu Lukaku.

They have only won three of the last 10 games in all competitions including defeats to Southampton, Wolves, Watford and Newcastle in the Premier League and a shock-cup exit against Millwall in the FA Cup.

Everton are 20 points off sixth-placed Chelsea but just nine points above the relegation zone with eight games to play.

They won’t drop down further into a relegation battle but it is looking increasingly likely that they won’t achieve a top-half finish this campaign.

Silva may be given longer to develop his style and attract further players to Goodison Park but he will need to find some consistency soon otherwise the blue half of Merseyside may be in the market for a new manager once again.
