Bayern need a “perfect game” to deal with Liverpool’s counter attack, insists Rodriguez

James Rodriguez believes Bayern Munich will have to play a “perfect game” if they are to stand any chance of progressing past Liverpool on Wednesday.

The two sides lock horns once again in their Champions League round-of-16 second leg, with the score tied at 0-0 after an intense first leg at Anfield.

What are Bayern’s chances against Liverpool? Five key things to know…

  1. Bayern put in an impressive performance in their 0-0 draw at Anfield last month.
  2. That said, if Liverpool score an away goal, it could leave the Bavarians with a mountain to climb.
  3. Bayern have only beaten Liverpool once in their previous eight meetings, a 3-1 win in 1971.
  4. Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez, though, has never lost against Liverpool in three meetings.
  5. Rodriguez believes Bayern will need a “perfect game” in order to get past Jurgen Klopp’s side.

And although Bayern impressed with their compact, disciplined performance in February, the Colombian is cautious of the attacking threat posed by Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead of their clash at the Allianz Arena.

“We have to play a perfect game at home to go through,” Rodriguez told Bayern’s official website. “Liverpool have very fast players, they feel comfortable when you give them space. That’s why we have to be very focused, highly motivated and play a good game.

“I think we have to be very careful. Their counters are very fast. But I think we have every chance of making it into the next round.”

Rodriguez has faced Liverpool three times so far during his career and remains unbeaten against the five-time European champions.

However, the 27-year-old insists he ‘always has faith’ that Bayern will win, regardless of the opponent.

“I always have faith and I always want to win,” he added. “I always want to play in the Champions League and so I hope that we do well and progress. That’s what we all want.”

Rodriguez wary of Liverpool’s front three

Liverpool’s famed attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored a combined 30 goals during last season’s Champions League, while they have added another six to that total in this campaign.

And although you could make a case for each being a standout individual talent, Rodriguez believes their collective quality is what the Bavarians should be focusing on.

“They’re all players with great quality, you can’t focus on just one” the Real Madrid loanee said. “They’re all very good and that’s why we have to work together as a group to eliminate them and get through.”
