Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on Unai Emery for leading Arsenal to fourth place with the “worst set of players” in the top six of the Premier League.
Arsenal jumped above Manchester United into fourth on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over the Red Devils at the Emirates.
Can Arsenal qualify for the Champions League? Five key things to know…
- Arsenal have been in a battle with Chelsea and Man Utd for fourth place all season.
- After Sunday’s win, they find themselves just one point behind third-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the table.
- The Gunners have no more fixtures against top-six rivals and arguably have the fairest run-in of the sides around them.
- Man Utd and Spurs are yet to face Man City for a second time, while Tottenham and Chelsea still must travel to Liverpool.
- Emery’s side have lost just one of their last eight league games.
Arsenal haven’t finished in the top four since ending up second behind champions Leicester City in the 2015/16 campaign.
And Carragher believes Emery has done an impressive job with the players he has at his disposal.
“I actually think Arsenal’s set of players in the worst in the top six,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“If you see where teams should finish judged on their squad I’d say they should finish sixth and at this moment they’re fourth. I think that shows the job he’s doing and that’s the change here in the stadium.
“The team he wants is a more intensive team than the one we saw under Arsene Wenger. Even under Wenger you never really got the stadium like that. There’s an intensity about it. Coming here in the last four years I haven’t really seen that.”

Neville: Emery is doing brilliantly
Gary Neville echoed his co-pundit’s words, praising the work Emery has done with the “limited” squad he has to work with.
“He’s working with a squad that’s limited, in the sense that you’re thinking it should be finishing sixth in the league, but he’s doing brilliantly with it,” Neville added.
Arsenal’s dream of playing Champions League football next term could rely on finishing in the top four after their disappointing result in the Europa League last week.
The Gunners lost 3-1 in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie against Rennes but will be hopeful of turning the scoreline around in the reverse fixture at the Emirates.
