Carragher and Neville hail Emirates’ “real big” atmosphere since Emery took over Arsenal

The atmosphere at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium has been revitalised since the arrival of manager Unai Emery, according to Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

Emery’s side produced a fantastic performance on Sunday afternoon as they secured a 2-0 victory over top-four rivals Manchester United.

A progressive season for Arsenal? Five things you need to know…

  1. Emery took over from long-serving manager Arsene Wenger last summer.
  2. After losing their opening two matches, the Gunners went on a 22-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
  3. They are currently fourth in the Premier League, one point behind arch-rivals Tottenham and two ahead of fifth-placed United.
  4. Arsenal are also still competing in the Europa League but will need to overturn a 3-1 deficit against Rennes later this week.
  5. The Gunners are the third highest goalscorers in the Premier League this season (63) with the fourth best goal difference (+24).

Discussing the club following their impressive result against a previously unbeaten Ole Gunnar Solskjaer side, former Man United defender Neville couldn’t help but heap praise upon the north Londoners, lauding the “energy” seen at the Emirates this season.

Neville told Sky Sports: “I think there have been moments when they’ve lost games and people have said ‘oh, it’s not different than last year’.

“It’s a lot different in the sense that I’ve seen two games live here – this one and the Tottenham game – where the atmosphere has been absolutely outstanding.

“The performance today and last week at Wembley was also outstanding with a team that doesn’t inspire you that much.

“There’s an energy about them and I think he’s achieving the maximum with the players.

“There will be a couple of bumps in the road, they need a couple of good transfer windows to still to get them back to where the Arsenal fans wants them but at the moment, it is a really good start. At this moment in time, they’re in real good shape to finish in the top four.”

Carragher compares Emery to Wenger

Continuing the discussion, former Liverpool defender Carragher started comparing the overall current feel of Arsenal to the latter years of Wenger’s tenure.

Carragher believes that the club are overachieving under the former Paris Saint-Germain boss and that their performances have drawn out an intensity at the Emirates that hasn’t been seen in a long time.

He said: “When you think of the Arsene Wenger teams of the last few years, even when they were playing well, you wouldn’t get the stadium like it was today.

“It feels like there is an intensity in the stadium and a real big atmosphere. Coming here over the last four or five years, I haven’t really seen that.

“Where it hasn’t changed is that they’re still conceding lots of goals, they still look awful at times defensively and are still getting rolled over in big games by high scores.

Next up for Emery is Arsenal’s second leg Europa League round-of-16 tie against Rennes at the Emirates on Thursday with the club looking to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg in France.
