Christian Eriksen has said the “long wait until the next game” won’t help Tottenham’s bid to get back on track after Saturday’s surprise defeat at Southampton.
Spurs suffered their third loss in four league games at St Mary’s and must now wait three weeks until their next match, a difficult trip to Liverpool.
What is responsible for Tottenham’s dip? Five key things to know…
- While Harry Kane was injured, Spurs still managed to win four league games on the bounce.
- However, Mauricio Pochettino’s men scraped through those fixtures and expected their wins to become convincing upon Kane’s return.
- Kane has scored in three of his four league appearances since returning but Tottenham have lost three of those four games, drawing the other.
- No other player has scored in that time and Spurs have made too many individual defensive mistakes.
- Pochettino’s absence from the touchline as the result of a ban also didn’t help matters in the defeat at Southampton.
The Londoners are in Barcelona this week taking part in a three-day training camp.
Despite suggestions the warm weather could be what Tottenham need to bounce back, Eriksen is adamant that the timing of the team’s latest defeat will make it difficult for the players to get out of their systems.
“It’s a long wait until the next game, some of us will have internationals but this week it will be tough to get over it,” Eriksen told the club’s official website.
“Again, we need to look ahead. What’s happened has happened and all we can do is try to get back on track.”
The Dane was also asked what went wrong in the second half at Southampton following a first period in which Spurs had dominated.
He added: “They went to press a bit more, we dropped a bit, played more long balls than we did in the first half and never really got control of what was going on. That’s why we lost compared to the first half.
“We had a lot of chances and should have finished it off. You can create as many chances as you want but sometimes the opponents create one or two chances and they score. It’s a big blow because we were in control but what could go wrong went wrong in the second half and that leaves a bad feeling.”

Pochettino: Three-week break the “worst thing” for Tottenham
Pochettino, who is banned from the touchline again in the next game at Anfield – pending an appeal – was equally disappointed after Saturday’s loss.
The Argentinian also suggested a break is the opposite of what Spurs need right now.
He said: “It’s very disappointing, difficult to talk, difficult to explain and now the worst thing is we have three weeks ahead without competition and it’s difficult now to put out all those bad feelings.”
After the trip to Anfield, Tottenham will face either Brighton & Hove Albion or Crystal Palace in the first match at their new White Hart Lane-based stadium.
