Everton fan Jon Walters explains why he wants Liverpool to win the league

Burnley forward Jon Walters has explained why he wants Liverpool to win the Premier League.

Having spent a large amount of this season atop the Premier League table, the Reds currently sit a point behind current leaders, Manchester City.

Why would an Evertonian want Liverpool to win? Five key things to know…

  1. Liverpool are chasing a first league title in 29 years.
  2. The Reds currently sit a point behind leaders Manchester City.
  3. Burnley’s Jon Walters grew up as an Evertonian but wants Liverpool to win the title over City.
  4. The 35-year-old volunteers for local charities in Liverpool and believes it would be good for the area.
  5. Liverpool beat Walters’ Clarets teammates 4-2 on Sunday to keep the pressure on City.

Walters is a boyhood Evertonian but despite his allegiances to the blue half of Merseyside, the Ireland international has revealed the touching reason behind backing the Reds for the title.

“I grew up an Everton fan,” he told the Irish Times while volunteering at Birkenhead’s Charles Thompson Mission, where he helps tackle poverty and homelessness in the Merseyside area.

“People ask each other who they would rather see win the league: Manchester City or Liverpool? I’d rather Liverpool win it, to have something good happen for the area.”

Walters, 35, then added that the city of Liverpool has a togetherness ‘like no other: “There are a lot of reasons for it politically if you go back in history, but it’s a city that tends to come into its own when the times are hard.”

The Republic of Ireland international gives up a lot of his own time and money to fund the cause and having seen the effect homelessness can have on people, stressed its utmost importance.

“Look, I know everybody has their own story,” he said.

“And some people have made bad decisions but regardless of what side you see yourself as being on, this shouldn’t happen.

“People shouldn’t have to come to a foodbank to get bread and butter on a Sunday morning, they shouldn’t have to come to be somewhere that is warm, just to get out of the cold and wet. And it’s terrible to watch the decline in people; they age so quickly when they are on the streets.”

Klopp: nobody gets rid of us

Walters’ reasons for wanting Liverpool to win the title are heartfelt, while Jurgen Klopp is in defiant mood after his side ran out 4-2 winners against his Burnley teammates on Sunday.

The victory maintained the one-point gap behind Man City at the top of the Premier League table, and Klopp insisted that kind of performance shows they will not be brushed aside in this title race.

“The message of the day (in the title race) was ‘nobody gets rid of us’ if we play as we played today,” the German said.

“So, just do the job and that is what the boys did all the time. We have only to make sure that we stay in the really interesting competition on top of the table.

“We had the perfect mixture of fighting the opponent, fighting the circumstances and playing football. That was really good and I liked it.”

Liverpool face Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday before travelling to Fulham in their next Premier League game.
