Feisty scenes from Huddersfield v Arsenal: the 3pm Premier League action you might have missed

Milestones reached and plenty of goals scored in an eventful afternoon in the Premier League’s 3pm kick-offs.

Arsenal finally managed to break down a resilient Huddersfield side to win 1-0 at the Emirates. Manchester United managed to put a disappointing week behind them with a well earned three points at Old Trafford. Goals from Juan Mata, Ashley Young, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford helped the Red Devils thump Fulham 4-1.

Meanwhile, Burnely managed to see off Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0, Cardiff City did the same to Southampton and West Ham United managed to battle back against London rivals Crystal Palace to win 3-2 at the London Stadium.

Here are seven things we learned from Saturday’s 3pm kick offs.

1. Arsenal can’t hack the first half

Once again the Gunners fail to leave an impression on the first half. Unai Emery’s side are still to enter their dressing at half time with a lead under their belts this season.

They came close a fortnight ago when they made it to injury time at the Vitality Stadium with a 1-0 lead via Jefferson Lerma’s own goal. But then Joshua King grabbed an equaliser before the break to send Arsenal to their changing rooms with the scores level for the 10th time.

Lacazette was denied the opportunity to change this dismal record on Saturday afternoon, but his first-half goal was disallowed against Huddersfield –  the second time the Frenchman has had a goal disallowed in less than 72 hours – and he was taken off at half time.

The Gunners finally broke the deadlock in the second half whe Pierre Aubameyang’s pass to Lucas Torreira opened the scoring, taking his side to third place in the Premier League.

2. A feisty one at the Emirates

Even though Arsenal failed to score in the first half (again!), it wasn’t like the first period of this clash was uneventful.

The first 45 minutes saw referee, Paul Tierney, flash more yellow cards than in any other first half in the Premier League this season.

Four Arsenal players including Sokratis, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Shkodran Mustafi and Granit Xhaka made it into Tierney’ notebook and three Huddersfield players including Tommy Smith, Alex Pritchard and Danny Williams also got booked.

3. Fulham can’t keep the ball out of their own net

The Cottagers’ leaky defence was exposed again at Old Trafford as they conceded three before the break. United weren’t at their best today, but that didn’t stop them from running rings around Fulham’s brittle defence.

The west Londoners are now the only side in the Premier League to have not finished a game without securing a clean sheet.

Their resounding defeat at Old Trafford means they remain at the bottom of the table, with relegation looking like the likely outcome at the end of the season.

4. MacArthur strikes again

James McArthur opened the scoring for Crystal Palace this afternoon against London rivals West Ham United at the London Stadium.

His close-range effort was aided by the head of former West Ham defender James Tomkins and McArthur was there to slide the ball under goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

The Scottish midfielder has now scored two goals in his last three Premier League games, as many as he managed in his previous 29 appearances.

5. United players win some personal victories

In a rare occurrence for Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd side, they went three goals ahead before the break on Saturday afternoon, which provided some needed confidence boosts to some of United’s players.

Ashley Young ended a run of 39 games in all competitions without a goal for Manchester United, since netting twice versus Watford in November 2017. HIs sublime curling effort this afternoon should spur the full back on as Luke Shaw recovers from injury.

Romelu Lukaku also got off the mark after he converted Juan Mata’s incisive cross from close range. The Goal is the Belgian’s first at Old Trafford since the 31st March 2018.

6. Mata’s half century

Juan Mata grabbed his 50th assist against Fulham, becoming only the third Spaniard to claim as many assists in the premier League. Only Cesc Fabregas and David Silva have claimed more in the league.

Mata’s pass also helped Lukaku to finally break his goal scoring drought at Old Trafford. Mata got on the score sheet himself in the game after Marcus Rashford linked up beautifully with him in the first half. Rashford’s assist was his fourth in three Premier League games.

Marcus Rashford also got on the scoresheet in the second half with a wonderful long-range strike. The England international has now directly contributed to five goals in his last three Premier League appearances.

7. The Hammers reach milestones at home

Javier Hernandez notched his 49th goal in the Premier League at the London Stadium and unsurprisingly his goal was scored inside the box. All of Chicharito’s 49 Premier League goals have been scored in the box, only Tim Cahill has scored more with all 56 of the Australian’s goals coming from inside the penalty area.

Robert Snodgrass also made his mark on Saturday’s London derby with his first goal in a West Ham shirt and his first goal for any club since January 2017, when he scored for Hull against West Brom – 705 days ago.

Robert Snodgrass also got in on the act and has now directly contributed to four goals in his last three Premier League appearances.
