Explained: Why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to wear a bib for Man Utd’s PSG comeback

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained why he had to don a bib for the duration of United’s 3-1 win over PSG on Wednesday night.

The Norwegian could be seen wearing a fluorescent yellow bib over his black suit while on the touchline at the Parc des Princes.

Why was Ole wearing a bib? Five key things to know…

  1. Both Solskjaer and his opposite number Thomas Tuchel were wearing black, but only Solskjaer was asked to put a bib on.
  2. PSG were sporting an all-black kit.
  3. Only Solsjkaer was asked because the linesman on the Norwegian’s half of the pitch was on the opposing side, and so off-side decisions might have been obscured.
  4. United ran out 3-1 victors on the night, winning the tie on away goals 3-3.
  5. Rashford’s last-gasp VAR penalty has been seen by many onlookers as harsh on the Parisians.

Solskjaer, who has guided United to 14 wins in 17 matches since taking over the reins in December, saw the funny side of the situation.

“I had a black coat and they played in black,” Solskjaer explained (via Manchester Evening News). “So the linesman was over on the running side and I was running too much up and down to stop the offside trap!

“His (Tuchel’s) linesman was in front of him, mine was over there [on the other side]. So I tried to give that opinion to the fourth official but it was a sensible answer, to be fair.”

Rio reacts to a spectacular United win

The shock and magnitude of the win on Wednesday night pleased even the most partisan, non United-supporting fans.

But even former Red Devils weren’t expecting a result.

Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport after the win: “I didn’t have the confidence in these boys to do it, 10 boys out, I didn’t see this result coming with the way PSG played in the first leg.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brave with his team selection, he had three teenagers on the pitch, the character of these players after the starvation of moments like this. The confidence this will give them.

“Ole has brought belief back to this team. People were doubting Lukaku – he’s one of many who has been given a new lease of life.

“I don’t think it’s a penalty but turning your back, as a defender, you get punished for things like that.”
