Mario Gotze is one of four players whose talent left ex-Dortmund teammate Nuri Sahin “baffled”

Borussia Dortmund playmaker Mario Gotze is “one of four players” who baffled former teammate Nuri Sahin with his footballing ability. 

Sahin left Dortmund to join Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen in the summer but spent many years playing alongside Gotze for BVB.

Gotze has come under criticism for his lack of form recently and has only been involved in two matches for Dortmund so far this campaign.

However, Sahin insists that Gotze is one of very few players that astounded him with his natural footballing ability, starting from the age of just 16.

Speaking to reporters (via Bulinews) Sahin discussed how Gotze’s capacity to keep possession and to ensure he was victorious was evident from an early age.

“At his first training – and I remember very well, because I stood next to Jürgen Klopp (Dortmund coach at the time) – we played four-on-four.

“The boy didn’t engage in a single duel, but he didn’t lose the ball either, and his team always won. I said to Jürgen: ‘Coach, what’s that? I have never seen anything like that before.

Sahin named the other individuals who shocked him with their talent while also providing support for Gotze in his bid to get back to the form Sahin feels has already given him a fantastic career to date.

“Götze, Reus, di Maria and Marcelo. Their talent made me say ‘wow’ from the first moment,” the 30-year-old midfielder said.

“I know that more newspapers are sold when Mario is on the front page, but you have to stop talking about Mario Götze all the time, because it doesn’t do anything good for him. You should leave him alone.

“If Mario Götze presents his autograph card to any critic, the critic can’t say anything anymore. I’m sorry, but that’s a fact. Mario is born in 1992, he’s 26 years old! What this boy has done is unbelievable.”

Borussia Dortmund’s next fixtures

Gotze may get the opportunity to improve upon his slow start to the campaign on Saturday when Dortmund host FC Augsburg at the Westfalenstadion, before heading to Stuttgart after the international break.

Dortmund currently sit top of the Bundesliga on 14 points, unbeaten in six matches, and are one point ahead of current champions Bayern Munich.
