“It’s tougher to cheat” – Roque Mesa’s honest take on VAR

The introduction of VAR in Spanish football means you can no longer ‘cheat’ according to Sevilla midfielder Roque Mesa.

The 2018/19 La Liga season will see the introduction of VAR following its successful trial at the World Cup in Russia this summer.

The tournament was a huge success with VAR coming out of the competition with many positive accolades.

The Spanish football authorities have opted to introduce the technology into La Liga this season and Sevilla midfielder Roque Mesa gave an honest opinion about whether it will be good or bad for the game.

“In one way, VAR is good but on the other hand, you lose a bit the essence of football,” Mesa told reporters, in quotes carried by ESPN FC.

“You can no longer cheat or trick [the official].”

The midfielder joined the Andalusian club on a permanent deal from Swansea City this summer and was involved in the Spanish Supercopa against Barcelona, in which VAR was used.

The English Premier League, much to the shock and in some cases dismay of managers, opted not to introduce the system this season.

Sevilla’s and Mesa’s aim is to secure a Champions League berth this season after they fell short in 2017/18.

The club made a flying start to last season, winning four of their opening five games but a poor spell in December and another in March saw Sevilla end up finishing seventh, two points behind local rivals Real Betis.

They will play in the Europa League this season, a competition that they won three times in a row between 2014 and 2016.

They face Real Vallecano on the opening day of the new season, with the additions of Roque Mesa and six other new players – including the €30 million pair of Ibrahim Amadou and Joris Gnagnon from Lille and Stade Rennais respectively – giving them fresh ammunition to help the club break into the top four this season.
