Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hit out at Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas after the Spaniard criticised his former boss.
The two worked together for three years between 2010 – 2013 before Mourinho left the club after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract.
What went down between Mourinho and Casillas? Five things you need to know…
- Mourinho took charge of Real Madrid in 2010, spending three seasons at the club, though labelled his final year as the worst of his career
- The Portuguese’s spell in charge also brought the beginning of the end for Iker Casillas at Real, with Diego Lopez favoured by Mourinho.
- Casillas recently hit out at Mourinho for the way he dealt with things, admitted he wished he had confronted manager.
- And now Mourinho has bit back, claiming Casillas secretly challenged him, calling the goalkeeper a liar.
- Mourinho won 128 of his 178 games in charge at Real Madrid, with a win percentage of 71.9%.
Mourinho spoke with Portuguese publication Record and openly stated Casillas was lying when talking about their time at Madrid.
The United boss said: “It looks like an interview with someone who is at the end of his career.
“When he says he never confronted me he’s not telling the truth.
“He confronted me and he did it in a way in which no-one does it better than him, secretly.”
What did Casillas say about Mourinho?
The legendary goalkeeper was extremely forthright with his opinions when discussing his time playing under the guidance of the now-Manchester United manager.
In an interview with Universo Valdano channel Vamos, Casillas said: “He was brought in to compete with Barcelona and brought moments of great tension and that Madridismo that I mentioned that I don’t like came out, there was a limit that he went to with me that I didn’t want to go to.
“The third year wasn’t all good, although we won La Liga and it seems that there were many people whose relationship was shaken.”
Casillas went on to speak of his regrets in not confronting Mourinho, insisting he would act different were it to happen again – which the Portuguese manager took exception to.
“It wasn’t good for him, nor for me nor for the club,” he added.
“I think if it happened all over again, I would have taken the bull by the horns and faced Mourinho.
“At that time, I opted to be quiet and I thought that was the way to honour the values of Real Madrid.
“Nobody has wanted to talk about Mourinho to this day and I think it is maybe better to let it be and let it go.”
