Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has refused to confirm whether the German champions will choose to sign James Rodriguez on a permanent basis next summer.
The Colombia star is currently in the second season of a two-year loan from Real Madrid and its believed the German champions have a £31m option to sign him permanently.
Will Bayern activate their clause and sign James on a permanent deal?
1. The playmaker made 39 appearances for Bayern last season, scoring eight goals.
2. But James has fallen out of favour somewhat since the arrival of manager Niko Kovac last summer.
3. Reports have suggested that the 27-year-old is keen to leave Bayern and return to Real Madrid next summer.
4. So far this season James has made just eight Bundesliga appearances, scoring three goals.
Rummenigge has confirmed that Bayern do have an option to buy James on a permanent deal until June but has indicated that it’s still too early to make a decision over whether they will do so.
“We have an agreement that there is an option we can activate until June 15 2019,” Rummenigge told German outlet sport1, as cited by Football Espana.
“It’s November now, and I don’t think it’s worth discussing this in November.
“We will eventually make a decision, but certainly not in the near future. And that’s just not necessary given the date of the option we have.”
The club have already indicated that the playing squad will be refreshed next summer, with a number of Bayern’s senior players likely to move on.
The German champions find themselves four points behind Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund after 11 matches.
Which players are the future for Bayern?
The recruitment process for the next generation of players at the Allianz Arena has already begun, with exciting Canadian youngster Alphonso Davies arriving at the club earlier this week.
Manager Niko Kovac has gone on record as saying that Davies is a potential star of the future for the club, with the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery set to move on next year.
Bayern will also be hoping that the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Niklas Sule, Renato Sanches and Leon Goretzka will be able to drive the club to success in the coming years.
