Marcus Rashford might be getting “jealous” of Jadon Sancho, says Paul Ince

Marcus Rashford may be jealous of the playing time Jadon Sancho gets at Borussia Dortmund, according to former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince.

Rashford burst onto the scene at the start of 2016 with four goals in his first two Manchester United appearances but, since then, has struggled to hold down a regular starting place at Old Trafford.

Why might Rashford be jealous of Sancho? Five key things to know…

  1. Marcus Rashford scored four goals in his first two professional games for Man United in 2016.
  2. The forward played 136 games for Manchester United so far, scoring 34 goals but is struggling to hold down a place in the starting XI.
  3. Jadon Sancho moved from Manchester City to Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for a reported £8m.
  4. Sancho has five goals and seven assists in 16 appearances for the Bundesliga side this season so far, earning his place in the England senior squad.
  5. Ince believes this success and playing time may lead Rashford to be jealous of his compatriot, also calling him ‘naive’.

Sancho, on the other hand, has become one of Borussia Dortmund’s key players this season, scoring five goals and providing seven assists, displacing Christian Pulisic along the way.

And Ince, who made 281 appearances for United during his playing days, believes this comparative lack of starts could lead to Rashford becoming jealous of his fellow England international and that he should consider a move if his situation doesn’t improve soon.

The 51-year-old told Paddy Power, via Goal: “He’s at the age now where he needs to decide whether he wants to play every so often for Man United, or all the time for another club.

“There are some players out there who are happy to train and not play on a Saturday, but I don’t think he’s one of those.

“If he doesn’t want to move permanently, he should be considering a loan move to another English club. Because he should be playing every week. He shouldn’t be a bit-part player.

“A part of me wonders whether he sees young players like Jadon Sancho, flying at Dortmund and playing every week, and feels a bit jealous. Everyone’s talking about these incredible youngsters, who play all the time and score goals.”

What is Marcus Rashford’s best position?

Having made his breakthrough in 2016, Marcus Rashford has appeared in a variety of positions. Since Jose Mourinho took over in the Old Trafford dugout, the 21-year-old has played as a centre-forward, on either wing and even at wing-back.

For England, Rashford has also been used across the frontline, while Gareth Southgate often tucks the forward into a defensive wide-man position when the Three Lions come under pressure.

And Ince believes it is this versatility that is stopping Rashford from nailing down a regular starting berth, while also expressing hope that he will soon be rid of the naivety that comes with being a young player.

He added: “Yes, he’s naïve at times, but he’s got bags of talent and he’s still young.

“He always looks fantastic for England. His main issue is that at the minute it’s not clear what his best position is.”

Manchester United face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday and are looking to bounce back from their 3-1 Manchester derby defeat before the international break.
