Man City without Benjamin Mendy for three months, confirms Pep Guardiola

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy will be out for three months, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The defender picked up a knee injury in City’s 3-1 win over Manchester United and underwent surgery during the international break.

Benjamin Mendy’s injury-hit Man City career. Five key things to know…

  1. Mendy signed for Man City last season but made just seven appearances in the Premier League due to injury problems.
  2. The Frenchman looked to be making this season his, already starting nine league games and linking up well with his City team-mates.
  3. But Mendy would undergo surgery on a knee injury during the recent international break.
  4. And Guardiola has now confirmed the full-back will not return to action until the New Year.
  5. Mendy has recorded five assists in the Premier League this season, with only Ryan Fraser and Raheem Sterling (both six) created more.

City had previously confirmed Mendy’s surgery but it wasn’t until Guardiola’s pre-match press conference in the week that a timeframe was given.

Replying to reporters when asked how long Mendy would be absent, the Spaniard said: “10 to 12 weeks.”

This is already Mendy’s second injury break of the season, having missed six games in September with a foot injury.

And it comes after the Frenchman missed the large majority of his debut campaign with City, with a cruciate ligament injury ruling him out for eight months. But that did not stop him endearing himself to the City fans, with Mendy building a fun reputation for his social media use and enthusiasm in watching on from the sidelines.

Pep not a fan of Mendy’s social media use

A spectator for Man City’s 4-0 win over West Ham United on Saturday to remain top of the Premier League, Mendy was active on social media, posting a shark emoji each time his team-mates scored.

As always, the tweet got a good reception among City fans, who were celebrating the continuation of their unbeaten start to the Premier League.

But, if his previous words are anything to go by, City manager Guardiola will be hoping Mendy will focus on his recovery rather than social media profiles.

Speaking after an especially erratic performance from Mendy against Arsenal, in which he was described as being “everywhere”, Guardiola said: “Mendy is… Mendy. Sometimes you want to kill him, and sometimes you want to say, ‘What a player!’.

“He can improve. Hopefully we can convince him to be calm and forget a little bit the social media and focus.”
