“Like a madman” – Gervinho recalls unforgettable training sessions with Mohamed Salah

Gervinho has admitted how impressed he was with Mo Salah in training while the players were at Roma.

Both Gervinho and Salah were attackers at the Italian club between 2015 and 2016.

Gervinho on Salah. Four key things to know…

1. Salah essentially ended Gervinho’s Roma career once he arrived in 2016.

2. Gervinho was impressed with Salah’s work-rate and tenacity in training.

3. Salah joined Roma on loan for a season for £4m before making it permanent for the 2016-17 season.

4. The Ivorian now plays with Parma, where he has scored once every two games.

On the topic of Salah – who since joined Liverpool for £34m and helped carry the team to the Champions League final and a top-four spot last season – Gervinho was glowing in adoration.

“Salah is a tough guy,” Gervinho told the Guardian. “Always calm and strong, with the mentality of a hard worker.

“I’ll never forget his training sessions: very high rhythm, pushed like a madman, you watched him in amazement.

“He had a sort of positive effect – you saw Salah and wanted to work harder. Talent and sacrifice.”

Gervinho and Salah: contrasting fortunes

Since failing to impress much at Chelsea, Salah’s career has been on a steep upward trajectory since his move to Roma.

Named Roma’s Player of the Season in 2015-16, the Egyptian subsequently hit 32 in 36 league games for Liverpool the subsequent year as The Reds hit new heights under Klopp.

Gervinho signed with Hebei China Fortune after being found surplus to requirements at Roma, and spent two years there, before going back to Serie A football to play with newly promoted Parma.

At Parma, Gervinho has already hit four in eight, showing some of the ability showcased for Lille, where he scored 18 goals in each season in all competitions.
