Cardiff vs Brighton predictions and match preview

A big game at the bottom of the Premier League, as Cardiff look to pick up their second win of the season and move out of the bottom three.

Cardiff are currently second from bottom in 19th, but a win would give them enough points to potentially move up into 15th and out of the relegation zone. Brighton are out of trouble at the moment, although they are only in 12th and will have one eye on what is happening below them in the table.

When is Cardiff vs Brighton?

Competition: Premier League

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium

Date: Saturday 10th November

Kick-Off: 12:30pm BST

Match Preview

A recent run of three wins from their last four games has taken Brighton away from the trouble at the bottom of the table and other teams down there will be looking at that and trying to replicate it. That includes Cardiff, who have just one win from their first eleven games this season, and ultimately look as though they are going to be stuck in the relegation battle for the entire season.

Whether it is draws or wins, they need something on the board, eight defeats from eleven is not good enough and they have to find a way to put points on the board.

Brighton have done the hard work in recent games to kick away from trouble, and now they need to maintain their position in the table. Up in 12th, they are eight points away from the bottom three, and if they can keep up their recent performances it will be highly unlikely that they will get dragged into trouble this season.

Where Can I Watch Live?

This game is the first Premier League game of the weekend, and being the lunchtime kick off on Saturday it is available to watch on Sky Sports Premier League. This is channel 402 on Sky and 512 on Virgin Media.

Is Defensive Strength Enough to Keep Cardiff Safe?

So far we have seen a distinct lack of ambition from Cardiff, and from their opening eleven games they have scored just nine goals. They are relying on strong defensive play to get them through, but it doesn’t appear to be working for them up to now.

There is no doubt this tactic worked for them in the Championship, but playing against Premier League quality strikers, they may have to look for another way to play if they want to stay in the Premier League.

Can Brighton Become a Premier League Regular?

Many people expected Brighton to go back down to the Championship at the first time of asking last season, but they managed to avoid relegation at the expense of some bigger, more established Premier League names. They have shown in recent weeks that they are capable of putting a run together, and being a part of the Premier League, rather than just trying to survive from week to week. We have seen smaller clubs like Bournemouth go on to be Premier League regulars, Brighton may be the next to do that.

How Many Points Will be Needed for Premier League Safety This Season?

Last season, Southampton were the lowest team to survive in the Premier League with a total of 36 points. The magical number has always been around the 40 mark, but this season it could be even less than last. We have a number of clubs at the bottom of the league who are struggling right now, and that could lead to a very low points total needed for survival. Teams at the bottom will pick up, but don’t be surprised to see someone survive this season with a points total in the low 30s, possibly even 30 may be enough to stay up.

Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between these two teams in the top flight of English football, although in total they have met 67 times.

Cardiff wins: 22 Brighton wins: 23 Draws: 22

Team News

The influential pair of Pascal Gross and Davy Propper are both likely to miss this game for Brighton, with more time needed before they can get back to playing club football.

Cardiff will be without Harry Arter who is banned for this one after a yellow card last week, he joins long term injury casualties Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Lee Peltier.

Squawka Prediction

Cardiff are relying too much on their defensive play right now, and that is not good enough to kick them clear of the relegation zone. Brighton come here on the back of an improved run that has seen them win three of their last four, and they can bag another win here on Saturday afternoon.

Predictions & Betting Tips

1. Brighton to Win @ 2/1

Brighton have been impressive in recent weeks during a run which has seen them win three of their last four. With form like that, they are a class above any of the teams at the bottom of the table, and that is something we look set to see again here.
Cardiff will work hard but ultimately Brighton may have that little bit of additional quality to win this game.

Key Stat: Brighton have won three of their last four games

2. Total Goals Under 2.5 @ 8/15

Despite being at home, there is no doubt that Cardiff will try their best to keep this tight. Brighton have enough to win the game, but they will probably not be able to really exert themselves on the game, which could give us a low scoring affair.
With the way Cardiff set up, this looks set to be a tight one, with few scoring chances.

Key Stat: Cardiff have scored just nine goals all season

3. Draw at Half Time @ 10/11

Carrying on the theme of this being a close game due to how Cardiff set up, the draw at half time is an interesting bet. Brighton may find that it takes them time to break Cardiff down, and they have to remain disciplined and patient if they want to pick up the win. That may stretch into the second half, as Cardiff will be doing all they can to keep this a goalless game in the first half.
