England’s first match of the latest international break will see them take on the USA this Thursday in a match that has been named ‘The Wayne Rooney Foundation International’.
Former England captain Rooney, who’s now playing his football with MLS side D.C. United, retired from international duty in August 2017, but will turn out for the Three Lions for the final time this week.
Rooney was named in a 28-man squad named by Gareth Southgate last Thursday, with England also set to continue their Nations League campaign with a home tie against Croatia at the end of this week.
The match has been named after Wayne Rooney’s charity in a bid to support the forward’s charitable interests and England boss Southgate believes the 33-year-old deserves a send-off such as this one having become the Three Lions’ all-time record goalscorer.

Match Preview
The decision to choose this as the time to commemorate Rooney’s international career has raised eyebrows amongst a lot of supporters.
Some believe Rooney hasn’t warranted an occasion such as this one at all having never won a trophy with England, and there was also controversy when it was revealed the FA will not be donating any of the proceeds from this match to the Wayne Rooney Foundation.
However, England boss Southgate has insisted the friendly will be a momentous occasion and says he doesn’t understand the controversy surrounding the match.

“We are a strange country in that we bemoan the fact we haven’t achieved as much as we’d like,” Southgate said.
“And then we have a player who should be held in the highest regard and we are spending a lot of time justifying giving him that tribute.
“I think there would be numerous examples of people that have earned caps in different circumstances.
“The fact is it is an opportunity to pay tribute to what he has achieved.”
Southgate has indicated that he will use this match as a chance to try and learn new things about his England team, with the likes of Callum Wilson and Lewis Dunk both hoping to make their senior international debuts.

Who’s made the latest England squad?
Injuries to the likes of Harry Maguire, James Tarkowski and James Maddison have presented opportunities to a couple of England players that are yet to make their debuts.
The most eye-catching inclusion is Bournemouth forward Wilson, who has received his first senior England call-up having netted seven goals in all competitions so far this season.

The likes of Dele Alli, Fabian Delph and Jesse Lingard and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are back in the squad having missed the two away Nations League ties against Croatia and Spain during the previous international break.
How long will Rooney play?
It’s believed that Rooney is only likely to play the final stages of the match and Southgate has also confirmed that the England legend is unlikely to be wearing the No. 10 shirt.
Speaking during a press conference at Wembley last week, Southgate said he is satisfied with the circumstances the match will be played in.
“As the manager, my involvement was: ‘Am I happy for him to play a part in the game?’ Yes,” Southgate said.
“I’m still able to look to the future in terms of the squad I was able to pick and the things I want to see.
“I’ve talked a lot to the players about the importance of the shirt, the history, we’ve brought former players back in to speak to the squad, to present shirts.
“All other players would respect Wayne’s contribution deserves the best possible send off.
“I understand that’s caused a lot of debate and conjecture but for me it’s a small way of appreciating what he’s given to the country.”

The standout name from the USA squad for this tie is Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic.
As well as their trip to Wembley, Dave Sarachan’s side are to play Italy next Tuesday.
Brad Guzan, DeAndre Yedlin and Cameron Carter-Vickers are also part of the travelling party.
Head-to-head
The last meeting between these two sides came back in the 2010 World Cup, a game we will all remember for that costly Rob Green blunder following Steven Gerrard’s opener.
As you’d expect, the Three Lions have the more impressive record of the two sides and the USA have not managed to beat England since 1993.

Team news
England have a number of injury concerns heading into Thursday and there are likely to be a number of withdrawals from the squad in the coming days.
Right-back Kieran Trippier was forced off early during Spurs’ win over Crystal Palace on Saturday and was since withdrawn, whilst Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp revealed that he is in talks with Southgate regarding the availability of Joe Gomez.
The defender was named in England’s initial squad but has been struggling with an achilles injury in recent weeks.
Southgate is likely to continue with the 4-3-3 system that worked so well in England’s victory over Spain last month.
Predicted England XI: Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Stones, Chilwell; Winks, Delph, Barkley; Sterling, Kane, Rashford.
Predicted USA XI: Guzan; Yedlin, Miazga, Brooks, Robinson; Trapp, Acosta; Weah, Green, Saief; Wood.
Squawka Prediction
England are unlikely to line-up with their strongest XI, but we still can’t see past a home win here. The Three Lions should have too much for the USA. 3-0.

2. Goal scored in both halves @ 4/6
England have been good starters under Gareth Southgate, scoring in the first half in nine of their 15 games this year.
The Three Lions have also been known to tire out early in the second half but given the occasion and opponent, a goal could come after half-time too.
