European Golden Boy: Mbappe looking to make history as final 20-name shortlist revealed

Paris Saint-Germain and France international Kylian Mbappe is looking to make history following the announcement that he is on the final 20-name shortlist to win the European Golden Boy award. 

The award honours Europe’s best footballer under the age of 21 and is voted for by a selection of respected sports journalists who work for a variety of Europe’s most recognised news outlets.

The talented Frenchman won the award last year following his successful stints at both AS Monaco and then PSG following his move that summer.

If Mbappe was to get his hands on the award once again, it would be the first time a footballer has won the European Golden Boy award twice.

Such is the talent of Mbappe – who not only bagged himself a selection of domestic honours but also a World Cup triumph this summer in Russia – he is considered one of the favourites to win the award, which would ultimately see him break yet another record in his short but exciting career so far.

Premier League representatives?

The final shortlist – which has 20 of the best young players in Europe listed – was put together by Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport.

There are a selection of Premier League names who have impressed and have been handed a chance to win the award themselves.

The most likely footballer to win from England is Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold who enjoyed a fantastic first season under Jurgen Klopp’s leadership, establishing himself as the club’s first choice on the right side of their defence and helping the Reds reach the Champions League final in May.

Other names include Everton’s Thomas Davies, Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Manchester United summer signing Diogo Dalot who impressed across the year for FC Porto.

Ajax’s Matthijs De Ligt and Roma’s Justin Kluivert are also in contention for the award, which will be decided later this month.
