Ranked: Every Chelsea loanee by success this season so far

Over the years Chelsea have earned a bad reputation for their use of the loan system.

Every season the Blues send away a plethora of players away to clubs over the globe either to train them for their first team, like Andreas Christensen or Ruben Loftus-Cheek, or to add value to their selling price a la Nathan Ake.

At the same time, there have been failures with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah struggling to break through the loan cycle before being off-loaded and coming back to haunt Chelsea later on.

But what of the current batch Chelsea have out on loan this season?

Squawka takes a look, and ranks the 40 – yes FORTY – Chelsea loanees below.

40. Charly Musonda

Club: Vitesse Arnhem

Position: Attacking midfielder

Age: 22

League appearances: 0

Musonda’s bad luck with injuries continues. The Belgium Under-21 international is yet to feature for Vitesse this season because of a knee problem.

39. Isaiah Brown

Club: Leeds United

Position: Forward

Age: 21

League appearances: 0

Izzy Brown is yet to play for Leeds this season but it is not entirely his fault. The youngster is currently out recovering from surgery on a cruciate ligament injury he suffered while on loan at Brighton. Brown is, however, hopeful of returning to fitness soon.

38. Jamal Blackman

Club: Leeds United

Position: Goalkeeper

Age: 25

League appearances: 0

Jamal Blackman has made two appearances for Leeds since joining on loan in the summer, but both have come in the League Cup. Yet to make a Championship appearance, the goalkeeper is a regular for the club’s U23 team.

37. Josimar Quintero

Club: Lleida Esportiu

Position: Central midfield

Age: 21

League appearances: 2

Quintero has played just 25 minutes of league football in the Spanish third division since arriving at Lleida.

36. Baba Rahman

Club: Schalke

Position: Left-back

Rahman is spending his third successive season on loan at Schalke but is still failing to get into the team regularly, playing only twice in the Bundesliga so far this term.

35. Charlie Colkett

Club: Shrewsbury Town

Position: Central midfielder

Age: 22

League appearances: 1

Shrewsbury Town are some way off the team which reached the League One play-offs final last season and Charlie Colkett has had very little chance in changing that. The midfielder has made just one appearance for the Shrews having fallen down the pecking order and suffering with a foot injury.

34. Lewis Baker

Club: Leeds United

Position: Central midfielder

Age: 23

League appearances: 8

Lewis Baker was once a young midfielder of promise in the Chelsea academy but, now 23, he is struggling again on loan. Now at Leeds, the Englishman has managed just 121 minutes of football in eight Championship appearances and is more likely to be found playing for the U23s.

33. Fankaty Dabo

Club: Sparta Rotterdam

Position: Right-back

Age: 23

League appearances: 5

Fankaty Dabo had tested himself at the top level in the Netherlands with Vitesse Arnhem but isn’t having too much success in the Dutch second division. The defender has missed the past three games for Sparta Rotterdam through injury.

30. Michy Batshuayi

Club: Valencia

Position: Striker

Age: 25

League appearances: 11

29. Joao Rodriguez

Club: Tenerife

Position: Centre forward

28. Kenneth Omeruo

Club: CD Leganes

Position: Centre-back

Age: 25

League appearances: 5

Following loan spells in England, the Netherlands and Turkey, Omeruo is now in Spain for the first time. Things aren’t exactly going to plan, though, with Leganes currently 18 in the table.

27. Ike Ugbo

Position: Centre forward

Age: 20

League appearances: 9

With just one goal in nine appearances Ugbo isn’t exactly turning heads in League One, although there is still time for him to come good.

26. Matt Miazga

Club: Nantes

Position: Centre-back

Age: 23

League appearances: 8

Hopes were once high for USA international Miazga but he has hardly stood out in France, appearing in eight of Nantes’ 13 Ligue 1 matches this season. The French side currently sit tenth in the table and Miazga can’t cement a starting spot.

25. Tiemoue Bakayoko

Club: AC Milan

Position: Defensive midfielder

Age: 24

League appearances: 8

After a season of struggles with Chelsea, Tiemoue Bakayoko endured a similarly slow spell at AC Milan, not starting for the Rossoneri until the end of October. In his past three appearances he hasn’t been too bad, but the midfielder is still some way off his Monaco form of two seasons ago.

24. Victorien Angban

Club: Metz

Position: Central midfielder

Age: 22

League appearances: 9

19. Kyle Scott

Club: Telstar

Position: Central midfield

Age: 20

League appearances: 9

Scott, a Bath-born USA youth international, is out of contract with Chelsea at the end of the season. Whether his one goal in nine Dutch second division appearances is enough to convince the Blues to renew his deal remains to be seen.

18. Jay Dasilva

Club: Bristol City

Position: Left-back

Age: 20

League appearances: 8

Jay Dasilva did really well at Charlton last season but is struggling a bit more for game time with Bristol City this season. Only recently has the Englishman fought his way to become a starter for the club.

17. Tomas Kalas

Club: Bristol City

Position: Centre-back

Age: 25

16. Kasey Palmer

Club: Blackburn Rovers

Position: Attacking midfield

15. Michael Hector

13. Mario Pasalic

A centre-back by nature, Trevoh Chalobah has been used in defensive midfield at Ipswich and is currently in a tough spell with the Tractor Boys struggling in the Championship. But the Englishman continues to show composure on the ball and promise for the future.

10. Jake Clarke-Salter

Club: Vitesse Arnhem

Position: Centre-back

Age: 22

8. Danilo Pantic

Club: Partizan Belgrade

Position: Central midfielder

Age: 22

7. Tammy Abraham

Club: Aston Villa

Position: Striker

Age: 21

After a pre-season with Chelsea, Tammy Abraham looked like he would be staying with the club as the third striker but would eventually leave for another loan spell back in the Championship with Aston Villa. The young striker has done well at the Villans, scoring five goals in the league including in three consecutive matches in October.

6. Dujon Sterling

Club: Conventry City

Nathan Baxter has been very impressive in League Two this season, keeping seven clean sheets from 16 games so far. Those seven clean sheets included five in a row as Yeovil started the new campaign well.

3. Mason Mount

Championship Team of the Season 2018/19

Club: Derby County

Position: Attacking midfielder

Age: 19

League appearances: 15

Mount’s excellent early season form in the Championship earned him an unlikely call-up to the senior England squad. His form has dipped slightly since then but the teenager has already done enough to prove he could one day play regularly for Chelsea.

2. Kurt Zouma

Club: Everton

Position: Centre-back

Age: 24

League appearances: 9

Zouma appears to have cemented his place in Everton’s back line already. The Toffees have conceded just three goals across the last four league games Zouma has started in. Maybe there is still a future for the France international at Stamford Bridge.

1. Reece James

Club: Wigan Athletic

Position: Right-back

Reece James is currently on his first loan spell away from Chelsea and it could hardly be going much better. The teenager has been brilliant for Wigan this season, winning the club’s Player of the Month award twice already.
