Former club president Ramon Calderon has suggested Zinedine Zidane has been offered the Real Madrid job, but the Frenchman has turned it down, for now.
Florentino Perez, Real’s current president, is reported to have made a personal call to Zidane.
Could Zidane rejoin Real? Five key things to know…
- The former Real player managed the club to three-successive Champions League titles.
- However he left in 2018.
- Appointments of Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari have not yielded the desired results.
- Real have once again been linked with Jose Mourinho or Mauricio Pochettino to take the helm.
- Now Zidane has turned down the offer of returning to his old club, but has left the door open to a summer move.
Speaking to laSexta (via AS), Calderon speculated on who will be the next manager at Real.
And he explained that Perez has already made an enquiry into Zidane’s interest as he looks to replace Solari.
He said: “I know that this morning, the president phoned Zidane to ask him to come back but Zidane told him that for now, it’s not something he is interested in.
“The president’s first option has always been Jose Mourinho.”
End of an era at Real – David Moyes
Irrespective of who the next manager is, there’s no getting away from the fact that Real’s period of unequalled dominance on the continental stage is over.
Not only that, but a squad of players who have achieved so much now appear in decline, with certain players performing well below their career peaks.
David Moyes said on BBC Radio 5 Live following the defeat against Ajax: “Real needed this game tonight, but they were well beaten. It should have been by more. A lot of people will be wanting to know what is going to change at Real Madrid. It is the end of an era.
“Cristiano Ronaldo left over the summer and you’ll now be looking at a Luka Modric, maybe a Toni Kroos or Sergio Ramos leaving. It would not surprise me if there is a complete change at Real Madrid in the summer.
“I think they are something like 25-30 goals down on what they were last season. That is because of Ronaldo’s goals. But I still don’t think you expect to go to the Bernabeu and win the way teams are doing at the moment. That title – the Galacticos – is not there at the moment.
“But they have a strong president and club and I’m sure they’ll already be thinking about how they rebuild to get back to where they have been.”
