Bayern handed good news & bad news ahead of Liverpool clash in Champions League

Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac has confirmed Kingsley Coman is likely to play against Liverpool following an injury but Arjen Robben will miss next week’s second leg with a calf problem.

The sides played out a goalless draw at Anfield in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, meaning a score draw in Germany will be enough to send Liverpool through to the quarter-finals.

Has Robben played his last Champions League game for Bayern? Five key things to know…

  1. Robben has missed a number of games this season with thigh, knee and back issues.
  2. His latest injury is a calf problem that will keep him out of next week’s meeting with Liverpool at the Allianz Arena.
  3. The Dutchman, who picked up the injury in training this week, also missed the first leg.
  4. Robben has announced he will leave Bayern at the end of the season when his contract expires.
  5. The 35-year-old may have already played his final Champions League game for the club if Bayern are eliminated next week.

While Robben will definitely miss the Liverpool clash, Kovac had more promising news on Coman.

“Arjen Robben injured his calf and won’t make the squad,” Kovac said in a press conference, according to Goal.

“Coman is on his way back and we’re hopeful for the Liverpool game. Arjen definitely won’t be ready for that game.

The Bayern boss then gave an update on Corentin Tolisso, who will also miss the second leg through injury.

“We expect [Corentin] Tolisso back at the end of this month,” Kovac added.

Kovac: Bayern stars “surprised” by Low’s Germany decision

Earlier this week, Germany coach Joachim Low revealed Bayern trio Thomas Muller, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng will no longer be called up to the national team.

Kovac has said those players were “surprised” by Low’s decision but could respond this week by showing their ability on the pitch.

He said: “I know that my players were surprised by Low’s decision.

“But they are real pros and they know how to handle this situation in a serious way.

“I even expect, especially in the coming weeks, a response from them to show and prove that they are still part of the best.”
