Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet has claimed he could have joined Juventus in 2012.
Lenglet, who says he based his decision on reasons related to playing time and personal development, instead moved to Barcelona following spells at Nancy and Sevilla.
In 2012, Antonio Conte was at the helm at Juve, with whom he won three Serie A titles. The former Italy boss is known to play a regular XI with a limited degree of rotation. Although he won the Premier League in his first season at Stamford Bridge, it was reported this summer that Blues players grew unhappy with his unwillingness to utilise other options among his squad and two months later Conte was replaced by former Napoli head coach Maurizio Sarri.
“I was at Nancy and I’d only played three months in the French second division when Juventus came in to sign me,” Lenglet told Goal, before referring to the roll-call of veterans that have made up Juventus’ back line over the past six seasons: Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli, to name the three foremost examples.
The 23-year-old added: “However I was 18 and I only had a few months of professional football behind me. With the defence Juventus had back then, I wouldn’t have played or developed.
“it wasn’t a good time to leave my club. I’m very happy with the decision I made because I joined a very big club anyway.”
Who is Clement Lenglet?
Lenglet began his career at Nancy, where he made 85 appearances since his debut for the club in 2013.
There, the Frenchman won the Ligue 2 title in the 2015-16 season. He was then snapped up by Sevilla for £5m in January 2017. There, he made 73 appearances, notching four goals.
Stellar performances in Spain earned the attention of Barcelona, who signed the player for £30m in the summer of 2018.
At Barca, Lenglet has played 13 games in all competitions. However, he has not made Didier Deschamps’ most recent France squad to take on Holland and Uruguay.
