VAR to be used by Premier League next season

The Premier League is set to introduce the use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) next season, with the clubs agreeing in principle to the move.

At a shareholders’ meeting today, clubs were presented with key findings of the use of VAR based on non-live trials and use in the FA Cup and League Cup.

A statement on the Premier League‘s official website read: “Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to introduce Video Assistant Referees (VAR) to the competition in the 2019/20 season.

“At a shareholders’ meeting today, clubs were provided with an update on the non-live VAR trials being undertaken by the League and Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) this season.

“Key learnings from VAR’s use in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and other leagues across the world, were discussed in detail.

“The Premier League’s non-live testing programme will remain in place for the rest of this season, with a continued emphasis on those Saturday afternoons which have several matches being played concurrently, and developing a clear protocol for communicating VAR decisions to fans.”

VAR was used to great effect in this summer’s World Cup is now live in the top divisions of Germany, Italy and France.

The Premier League will now make a request to the International Football Association Board and Fifa with regards to introducing VAR.

How Twitter reacted to Richard Scudamore’s Premier League leaving gift

It has been a busy time for the Premier League, especially with the recent news that Premier League clubs were planning to donate £250,000 each toward a £5m parting gift for Richard Scudamore, who is stepping down from the head of the league next month after 19 years at the helm.

Commenting on his departure back in June, Scudamore told the Premier League’s official website: “It’s an absolute privilege to have been allowed to enjoy this role for so long, it is too much fun to be called a job. Football is an intoxicating environment and therefore difficult to give up being so involved, but my passion for what football means to so many and the positive impact it can make will never diminish.”

Despite Scudamore’s work for the Premier League over the past two decades, it is clear that fans and bloggers alike are not impressed by the supposed leaving bonus.

“Not good enough,” wrote Jay McKenna, who chairs Liverpool supporters group Spirit of Shankly, as it was reported Reds CEO Peter Moore refused to comment on whether his club had directly contributed to the ‘golden handshake’.

Other fans were equally unimpressed.

Meanwhile, in an official statement on their website, Burnley confirmed that the ‘arrangements’ for Scudamore’s departure had been agreed and divulged information about how the clubs were rationalising the payments.

Their statement read: “The Premier League has today agreed the arrangements for Richard Scudamore stepping down from his role as Executive Chairman.

“The decision was made by the Audit and Remuneration Committee and the Non-Executive Directors, supported and endorsed by the clubs.
“The payments, which will eventually total £5 million, will be spread over the next three years.”
The club also said the payments will be made with consideration to Scudamore’s ‘outstanding work’ for the Premier League, with the term that he will remain available on an advisory basis.
In conclusion to their statement, Burnley said: “Burnley Football Club supports the statement of the Premier League and the rationale behind such payments and the work carried out by the remuneration committee.
“The club will be making no further comment on this matter.”
