Gerrard received a back injection before his costly slip in the 2014 title race

Steven Gerrard has said he received an injection for a back injury before his infamous slip that saw Liverpool lose ground to Manchester City in the 2014 title race.

Liverpool had won 11 games in a row prior to their April meeting with Chelsea at Anfield, the first of their remaining three matches of the campaign.

In first half stoppage time, with the score 0-0, Gerrard slipped over in possession to allow Demba Ba through on goal. The striker scored and Liverpool eventually lost 2-0.

The following week, Brendan Rodgers’ side surrendered a 3-0 lead against Crystal Palace, drawing 3-3 and seeing their title hopes all but end.

Gerrard has now revealed he received an epidural injection for a back problem before the game, but refuses to use the treatment as an excuse.

The Rangers manager told the Daily Mail: “Don’t think that is an excuse. What happened was just pure bad luck but, when you do a book or film, especially with people who have won Oscars and made films such as Amy (the biopic of the late Amy Winehouse) and Senna, you must be as honest and open as you can.”

Liverpool’s ‘nearly’ year

Liverpool came incredibly close to winning the title in 2013/14. They beat Newcastle United 2-1 on the final day, but Manchester City’s 2-0 home victory over West Ham United took the title to the Etihad.

Gerrard scored 13 goals in 34 games across the campaign, which turned out to be his penultimate season at Anfield before joining LA Galaxy.

Luis Suarez was Liverpool’s standout performer in 2013/14, finding the net 31 times in 33 league appearances. He left for Barcelona that summer.

Liverpool, who are currently second in the Premier League, face Watford at Vicarage Road after the international break on November 24.
