Jose Mourinho: I’ve been trying to make a “top player” out of Anthony Martial

Jose Mourinho believes Anthony Martial is now starting to become a “top player” because of his man-management.

The 22-year-old, whose future at Old Trafford looked to be in doubt this summer, has been United’s most impressive player so far this season and has four goals in his last four Premier League games.

Mourinho, who many observers felt wanted to let the player go, nevertheless feels his challenging approach is the reason behind Martial’s recent upturn in form as the talent was already there.

“I never gave up,” Mourinho told the club’s official website.

“I never gave up my feelings that this was the right way for him, even if he had to go through difficult moments.

“I knew that for him to become a really top player, he needed to overcome some barriers that I put on the road for him. It is up to his talent, because he has phenomenal talent.

“It was just a question of him understanding what a top player is because there is a big difference between a top talent and a top player.”

Martial’s Man United career so far:

Since arriving in 2015, Martial has gone on to make no fewer than 149 appearances for United, registering 42 goals as well as creating a further 26 for his teammates, and winning three major pieces of silverware in the process: 2016 FA Cup, 2017 League Cup plus 2017 Europa League.

His first season, under the stewardship of Louis van Gaal, has been Martial’s best to date for both appearances (49) and goals (17).

Martial’s relationship with Van Gaal’s successor Mourinho has been rocky, and matters were not helped when the Red Devils signed Alexis Sanchez earlier this year. The Chilean’s arrival coincided with a loss of playing time for the French international, who lost a place in France’s squad at this summer’s World Cup.

But Martial has bounced back this season to bag six goals across 13 matches in all competitions. His recent match-winning displays have seen French national team boss Didier Deschamps recall him for their upcoming games against the Netherlands (November 16) and Uruguay (November 20).
