Lovren takes a dig at error-prone Sergio Ramos

Dejan Lovren has taken a swipe at controversial Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, claiming the Spaniard is more mistake prone than him.

Lovren played in both the Champions League and World Cup finals last season and generally acquitted himself very well at the heart of the Liverpool and Croatia defences.

However, the 29-year-old has a reputation as being mistake prone, a moniker which the former Southampton and Lyon man is eager to shake off.

And, in that quest to improve his reputation, Lovren has fired a shot at Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, who incurred the wrath of Liverpool fans when he injured Mohamed Salah in last season’s Champions League final.

“If you look, Ramos, he has many more mistakes than me but he’s at Real Madrid,” Lovren said (via Football365). “With Ronaldo, when you make a mistake, it’s 5-1, 5-2 and nobody sees the mistake.

“I’m quite unlucky, when I make the mistake it’s 1-0. When I do a mistake I don’t talk to anyone, not even my wife… you don’t know how it is.”

Lovren has also recently named himself among the world’s top five centre-backs in an interview with Copa90, an opinion which has been met with widespread scorn among fans and critics.

Lovren named his Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk, as well as Thiago Silva, among the world’s elite defenders, while also claiming that Raphael Varane falls into that bracket but doesn’t get enough credit because of Sergio Ramos.

He added: “I said I’m one of the best, not the best. It can be five, but look at this season and tell me who played in the Champions League final and then a month later in the World Cup final. I was second after Thierry Henry, I searched that information.

“I like Varane, he deserves a lot of credit but he doesn’t get it as much. Ramos get it, I don’t agree with that.”

How have Liverpool and Real Madrid started the season?

Last season’s Champions League finalists have started their domestic campaigns in vastly contrasting styles.

European champions Real Madrid have floundered in La Liga so far, currently sitting in ninth place with just four wins from 10 games.

Los Blancos were humiliated 5-1 by Barcelona in the recent El Classico, a result that ultimately cost Julen Lopetegui his job.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have started the new Premier League season in fine form.

The Reds currently sit joint-top of the Premier League with Manchester City on 26 points. Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in their opening 10 games and have conceded just four goals so far – 12 less than at the same point last season.
