Man Utd have “enormous” respect for City now, says David Silva

Manchester City star David Silva has claimed that Manchester United now have ‘enormous’ respect for Pep Guardiola’s side as the two teams prepare to face each other for the first time this season.

This Sunday will see the first Manchester derby of the season take place at the Etihad Stadium, with City currently two points clear at the top of the Premier League table and United in seventh.

United have 20 English top-flight titles, more than any other club. But since Sheikh Mansour took over City in 2008, no club has won the Premier League more times than the Sky Blues.

Silva, who has been at City since 2010, has spoken about the change in power between the two Manchester clubs in recent years and claims that Jose Mourinho’s side respect City more than ever.

“The atmosphere for a derby is always great. Even more so in these last few years,” Silva told the club’s official website.

“We had a huge amount of respect for them and I think you could tell.

“Then after the second year, everything started to change, and I think the respect that they have for us is enormous.

“The game is getting bigger and bigger. These games have something added now, whoever wins will see the effect all around the world.

“Honestly the games are getting better by the year, and we hope it keeps going like that.”

The day the tides turned in Manchester?

Silva went on to pinpoint City’s 6-1 win at Old Trafford in 2011 as a day that he felt that United gained a lot more respect for his side.

The Spaniard played a vital role in the victory, scoring the fifth goal and setting up the sixth for Edin Dzeko.

“United commanded a lot of respect when I arrived,” he added. “But I think it changed from when we won at Old Trafford 6-1 and the mentality changed a little bit that day.

“Now I think we are held in great esteem. You remember a bit about every derby you’ve played in,” he said, speaking in his role as an ambassador for the Anfi Group.

“But that one, the result, and the fact that it was at United, the respect that United commanded in that period in time, makes it one that will forever go down in history.”
