Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko has likened team-mate Harry Winks to Liverpool and England legend Steven Gerrard.
Winks, 22, emerged on the scene during the 2016/17 season and his performances were lauded in north London as he quickly established a starting berth under Mauricio Pochettino.
The defining moment of his nascent career came during a Champions League match against Real Madrid last season where the midfielder competed against the likes of Toni Kross and Luka Modric in the middle of the park.
He received widespread adulation as Spurs came away with a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu, though when it looked like he would play a focal role for the remainder of the season, and even for England at the World Cup, he suffered an injury set-back which ruled him out for three months.
Since his return this season, Winks has rediscovered his form and Sissoko believes the midfielder is in the same bracket at Steven Gerrard.
“At our club there is little Harry Winks,” said the France international in an interview with Foot Mercato.
“He is a very good player who reminds me of Steven Gerrard. I think he has the same profile.
“It is evolving. From day to day, we see him evolve, progress. He is confident. He is even in the England team so it proves that he is a quality player.
“He is the young player of the club that will explode in the years to come.”
Following his return to full fitness, as well as his recent form, Winks has been recalled by Gareth Southgate for England’s matches against the USA and Croatia.
“I feel good in Tottenham”
Moussa Sissoko has been consistently linked with a move away from Spurs having not fulfilled expectation since arriving from Newcastle in 2016 for £30m.
However, this season the Frenchman has impressed, even starting the previous five Premier League matches for Pochettino’s side, with the club winning four of those matches, and losing only to Man City.
In light of his recent form, the 29-year-old insists he feels comfortable in north London and is not looking for a move away from the club.
“I feel good in Tottenham. I am well settled,” he said.
“Everything’s going well for me. I am with my little family. They feel good about it. I think that’s the most important thing.
“You can tell me that each transfer window you hear my name, but I have always been good in my head. There will always be noises from outside but when you are solid in your head, when you know what you want and where you want to go, there is no need to worry about the future.”
Sissoko has been called up by Didier Deschamps for France’s Uefa Nations League match against the Netherlands on Friday, as well as a friendly against Uruguay on Tuesday.
